April 25th Holiday

by BobFromOmaha

Will the holiday have any effect on the usual tourist attractions?

Re: April 25th Holiday

Read the below about April 25th on the web page http://www.italylogue.com/planning-a-trip/liberation-day-in-italy-festa-della-liberazione.html

"If your vacation in Italy in April will be over the 25th, you’ll just want to confirm that anything you were planning to do/see that day will be open - or if it won’t, you’ll need to make other plans. Check with the front desk at the hotel or hostel where you’re staying, and with the websites of any of the museums or monuments you’re going to visit. They’ll almost always have a list of public holidays during the year when they’re closed."

Checking individual site websites is the most sensible thing to do. The Vatican Museums, Colossem/Forum/Palatine etc are open as usual, churches will be open (of course), sites such as the Trevi Fopuntain are never closed.....

http://www.pierreci.it/en/museums-and-monuments.aspx

will be useful for finding opening times for specific monuments/sites.

However, you may well find Rome (and its public transport, which may run to a different timetables) even more crowded than usual....so be prepared for that possibility.

Travel Tips for Rome

No Spring Rock Chick

by msmodeshowsuhow

I just had a few days off work and so went to Rome on my own. I decided to stay in a backpackers hostel for cheapness and because I thought a hotel room would isolating. I knew I’d made the right decision when I found myself at gone midnight, drinking not-so-cheap wine at a free open-air rock concert, with others from my hostel. What a great night.
As I’m 38, I had worried that the hostel would be full of much younger people and I wouldn’t ‘fit in’. Okay, well I was 9 years older than the oldest person I met, but although some of them were as young as my own child, nobody treated me like I was their mum. So, I’d say to any other ‘slightly older’ person thinking of staying in a hostel, if you’re up for it, go for it.

After four times that I've been to Roma I've understood that you need a whole life to know the city well. Roma always changes and it's a survival city. Roma is now looking towards the XXI century.

Also I wanted to say that Sofia Loren is probably the most famous actress from Roma. She won the Oscar in 1961. And I just wanted to offer an homage to her. Bravissima !

Some souvenir

by alemir82 about Souvenirs (General)

Sure, they're all over the place in most of the cities we visited, but if you want to actually buy some of their wares, this is the place. it's great fun to pick up something, look at it skeptically, and bargain down the price with the vendor. commonly sold items include leather goods (shoes, purses, belts, wallets, fake louis vuitton, etc), silk scarves & ties, flags, soccer jerseys, calendars, mugs, ferrari memoribilia, postcards, and all sorts of hokey trinkets you could never imagine.

Taxi

by fairy_dust

I've heard a lot of stories about taxi rip-offs but I never had any problems. At night, it's best to take a cab because the busses and metro don't run late and it can be dangerous to walk at night. If you're travelling with someone, just share the cost. But even in times when I took a cab on my own, the most I paid was around 10 Euros (from the Testaccio nightclubs to my hostel close to Termini).

I love Frascati wine;)

by rachel_sun

The best wine is Frascati and Galestro is currently popular too.Red wine is usually from Tuscany and includes Chinti,Vino Nobile and my favourite ,Barolo.Fish is good and mushrooms and artichokes are served mant different ways.Misticanza is also good in season(fresh salad leaves served with anchovy dressing. The deep fried cod fillets a typical Roman snack and beautiful(filetti di baccala). The toasted bread rubbed with garlic and olive oil was a favourite and Mozzarella cheese with herbs and tomatoes was wonderful.Pasta was great and the pizzas were ok,but not as nice as i thought.
