Nice and central
A nice hotel with kind staff close to Termini railway station which is the area where I usually stay as it's easy to catch the train to the airport the day of departure.
Rooms are quite big and breakfast is not bad.The hotel is in a palace(just like most hotels in this area) and the reception is just on the left side of the main building entrance.
The room rate for a twin room was 80 euro. They will advice for a restaurant nearby: Giotto, just do not go as it's really one of the worse places where I ate in Italy.
Unique Quality: The location.

NOT THE BEST IF YOU'RE HANDICAPPED
THE STAFF AT THE HOTEL WERE VERY HELPFUL, BUT SOMETIMES IMPATIENT WITH THE TOURISTS. I LINGERED AROUND THE WELCOMING AREA, FOR A WHILE, TO NOTICE HOW THEY TREATED CUSTOMERS. AFTER A 9 HOUR FLIGHT FROM CHICAGO TO ITALY, I WAS REALLY TIRED WHEN I ARRIVED WITH MY MOM. IT WASN'T CHECK IN TIME, AND WE HAD BAD "JET LAG", BUT THEY MADE ACCOMMODATIONS, AND ALLOWED US TO CHECK IN BEFORE TIME. WE FOUND POP, BEER, JUICE IN THE FRIDGE. IT WAS MY FIRST TIME ENCOUNTERING SOMETHING LIKE THIS, AND I THOUGHT THEY WERE COMPLIMENTS OF THE HOUSE. I LATER FOUND OUT, EACH DRINK WAS GOING TO COST ME 4 EUROS (AT 1.50 USD PER EURO). THIS BUILDING HAD TONS OF STAIRS FROM THE FIRST TO SECOND FLOOR; THE ELEVATOR WAS SMALL ENOUGH TO FIT TWO PEOPLE, STANDING NEXT TO EACH OTHER. IF YOU HAD A WHEELCHAIR (WHICH I DID), YOU COULD BARELY FIT IN THE ELEVATOR WITH IT. I BROUGHT A LOCK ALONG, AND LEFT IT IN THEIR STORAGE ROOM. I HAD A HARD TIME COMMUNICATING WITH MY FAMILY. THERE WAS NOTHING IN THE ROOM EXPLAINING HOW THINGS WORKED (I.E., THE TV, THE PHONE, SERVICES AVAILABLE; THOUGH WE DID GET A FREE MAP OF THE VICINITY). BREAKFAST WAS GREAT, AND DONNATELLA WAS REALLY ACCOMMODATING AND ALWAYS WENT OUT OF HER WAY TO HELP US. I EVEN LEFT HER A TIP ON OUR LAST DAY. THE HOTEL WAS BUILT IN THE 15TH CENTURY, FROM WHAT I READ ON THEIR WEB SITE, SO WHILE WE WERE THERE, THEY HAD MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH PLUMBING AND ROOFING LEAKS IN DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE BUILDING, SO WE WERE ALWAYS UP EARLY, TO THE SOUND OF SOMEONE POUNDING ON THE CEILING, OR TRYING TO REMOVE A PIPE. OVERALL, I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND THE PLACE TO SOMEONE WHO IS SEVERELY HANDICAPPED. I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT THE STAFF (IN GENERAL) BE A BIT FRIENDLIER, SO THAT THEY CAN HAVE MORE BUSINESS.
Unique Quality: I'VE MENTIONED THEM ABOVE. WE WERE CENTRALLY LOCATED, AND EVERYTHING WAS WITHIN AN HOUR'S REACH. WE DIDN'T SPEND MUCH ON TAXI. WHEN WE ARRIVED TO ITALY, THE HOTEL SENT SOMEONE TO PICK US UP; WHEN WE RETURNED TO CHICAGO, A DRIVER TOOK US TO THE AIRPORT ALSO. THE PLACE WAS VERY CLEAN THOUGH, EXCEPT FOR WHENEVER THEY WERE DOING CONSTRUCTION, AND THERE WERE BAGS OF CONCRETE MIX, ALL OVER THE PLACE (WHICH WAS OFTEN A HAZARD IF YOU'RE AN ELDERLY PERSON AND CAN'T MANEUVER AROUND AS IF YOU WERE YOUNGER).

Clean, comfortable & good value Hotel near Termini
We selected the Selene for its closeness to Termini transport connections and its reasonable rates. After reading mixed reviews we weren't quite sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by the overall standard.
Initially finding the hotel wasn't too easy as we arrived at night as there is no neon sign to pick out, but its only a 5-10 min walk from Termini one block before the Opera House - on the opposite side of the road. The hotel reception is actually next door to the hotel entrance but that wasnt a problem - it is a proper reception desk, and staffed 24 hours. The staff we met were always very welcoming and helpful. If you dont want to go too far in the evening there are nearby bars and restaurants.
The hotel itself is on the 3rd floor of the building, via a lift and secure door - there are steps to the lift which may be a problem if infirm, however there is a helpful and polite porter on hand to help with bags and show you how the doors work. We had a twin room at the front of the hotel and the furnishings were old but clean. The room was quite large with adequate wardrobe space, the beds were comfortable and the walls were sound-proofed ensuring it was quiet. There was a tv and free safe in the room. The bathroom was a good size and very clean.
The breakfast area was quite basic but again very clean and a plentiful buffet of cereals, juices, yoghurts, meats, cheese, rolls, pastries etc. Hot drinks are brought to order. I have to say the regular coffee was pretty bad, but the cappuccino and tea were fine and the hot chocolates served at another table looked very tempting. We had a early flight on our last day and the reception staff offered to organise a packed breakfast bag for us to take with us - croissants, juice, yoghurt ect - which kept us going after an early start.
We got a special winter offer rate - offers are on their website - and werent expecting too much but it was very good value for money and a decent standard of room in a very convenient location. We will certainly consider the Selene again when returning to Rome.
Unique Quality: Close to Termini and transport connections.
Opposite the Opera House.
