Self-catered apartments

by wayfinder45

I've been looking for a self-catered apartment for a family of 5 and haven't yet come across just the right thing. I'm looking for basic comfort and some character, but nothing too elegant or fancy. Open to several central locations, preferably situated where teenagers could get out and about on their own. I'd prefer two bedrooms with a sofabed or similar arrangement that would allow for some privacy/quiet time. Any suggestions? We'd probably rent for 3 or 4 nights.

Have you seen this list?

Yes, I'd look for them on VRBO.com too.

Thanks! I had looked at venere.com and some other sites, but I hadn't thought of VRBO.com. Looks like they have a nice set of listings!

Actually, I am not so enthusiast about VRBO. I've tried it a couple of times, experiencing a basic service, and properties which were not exactly as seen in their website. I travel often to Rome. Sometimes on business, for which I used this website http://www.bbroma.com. I usually found clean apartments and fair prices. I also travelled with my family, which entailed different requirements. We tried a few apartment rental agencies, and we chose http://www.romanhomes.com. We stayed at this apartment in the Campo Fiori district http://www.romanhomes.com/vacation_rentals/apartments/4_star/botticelli.htm
It had 2 double bedrooms, an ample sitting room and separate dining room, and 2 bathrooms. We enjoyed the patio. The staff was helpful at all times.
My suggestion for you is to go through an extensive feedback with the owner or agent, which will enable you to understand also their dedication. Also, although there is a multitude of apartments offered by agencies / owners, beware about low prices or low quality. Even with reportedly quality apartments you could be disappointed, so think about if you pursue low prices.

I guess experiences can differ. We've been pretty happy with our VRBO rentals to date but I do choose ones that have lots of reviews, descriptions and pictures.

A couple of years ago we got an apartment through City Apartments Rome, http://www.city-apartments-rome.com/ . They've got lots of apartments in the centre of Rome. Their pictures don't lie! Lots of character and the price is good for family travelling. They've got 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments, with sofa-bed too.

Thanks! I'll look there as well. I've found a lovely apartment in Venice for New Year's but am still looking for just the right place for our stay in Rome!

Travel Tips for Rome

the Appian way

by miromi

I have very beautiful memories of walking on the Appian way. All the history and beautiful countryside and the guy who flashed me and the prostitutes in miniskirts at the one end... oh wait, that's not so beautiful. Or just standing next to THE colosseum and feeling the beauty of the city soak in... ah!

FESTIVALS IN ROME

by icunme

If we are not in the midst of a festival, there is one on the way. Check the Rome meetings/events often as I do try to list them as they are approaching. You are welcome to e-mail me at any time if you are here, in transit, or planning your trip. I'll do my best to find out what is happening or direct you to where you can find the information you would like.

The Festival of San Lorenzo was celebrated in various locations throughout Rome on August 10. This legend urges you to pick a star in the sky and make your wish and prayer to Saint Lorenzo - he's very generous on this day especially. As my nephew is yet another Lorenzo (although no saint, to be sure!) we did celebrate. I attended this concert and then joined Lorenzo the unholy and the multitude at a rousing wine tasting celebration on the grounds of Casa Cine in Villa Borghese produced by the vintners of Lazio.

This concert took place in the courtyard of the Church of St Ivers on Via Risorgimento and the photo of this facility speaks for itself. I met and sat with two lovely ladies - one I have been able to keep in touch with from Florence.

Very nice department store where you can find clothe, shoes, bags, everything for women, men, children, etc. The name of this department store is the same that a village close to Alharuin.

Son unos buenos grandes almacenes, son muy parecidos a el corte ingles en distribución. Hay departamento de mujeres, hombres, complementos, etc.

getting around the Eternel City by train.

Stazione Termini is Romes main train station and the hub of the main transport system. But be warned,,do not linger and if u arrive late,,do not wait around long. There are usually taxis around,so catch one swifty. There are also buses here at most times that you can catch.
In summer months, expect the station to become very busy and long ques.
There are police here if u need to report anything and a lost luggage office too.
There is also a ticket office and a small money exchange booth. The foyer has a bookshop, telephones, post office, burger bar, cafe, ticket office etc.

Ambasciata D'Abruzo

by TRimer about Ambasciata d'Abruzzo

No real menu. You will sit down and they will start bringing you platters of food. The food is excellent, especially the appetizers. Keep in mind that you get more food than you can eat when you order here, so don't order too much. Dessert, wine and liquors are included in the price for the meal.
