The art of the Cosmati
by TheWanderingCamel
Byzantine mosaics were to be a focus of my trip to Rome, I knew they would be wonderful, they were and I must come back one day to see more. But, I also must come back to see more of the exquisite 12th century mosaic work of the Cosmati - the wonderfully precise and intricate mosaic inlaid work you see in so many of the city's churches. Floors, altars, walls, columns - it's everywhere and it's beautiful.
Wonderfully diverse geometric patterns are executed in coloured stone, gold and glass tesserae on a fields of white marble around large circles and rectangles of porphyry and serpentine. The variety is infinite, the effect is fabulous.
Another Use For Duct Tape
by GroovyDoc
Someone else had suggested duct tape on their Rome page. I found that putting a few pieces on my luggage made it easier to identify my bag. Also, now that security regulations do not allow locks on bags, I taped the zipper pulls together and then taped them to the suitcase with one big piece. That way the bag could be opened if needed, but not so easily that someone could open it quickly.
Shopping in Trastevere
by nicolettart about La Standa
We visited Trastevere, a suburb of Rome, on a rainy day. You can meet many local people here and see the beautiful church of Santa Maria in Trastevere. Trastevere also has the department store La Standa, selling all kinds of things. I thought this store was great for childrens' clothing. I picked up beautiful little crocheted sweaters and wool jumpers for no more than 20 euro each, which in US sell for at least double.
Ristorante - Pizzeria - Griglieria
by JennysTravels about SUD AMERICA
This restaurant is owned by a friend of my bf. He is orginally from Sardegna but moved to Rome over 25 years ago.
I loved everything from the moment we walked in. The decor, the smiling faces, the people eating. Just great. We had deep fried olives (AWESOME) for an app.
My main dish was Filetto di manzoal pepe verde. Cooked to a perfect meduim rare. This steak melted in my mouth! I can't stop thinking about it. I want to eat it again and again. The wine was great too ... from Sardegna. :) The service was top notch!!

Local place with a nice menu and good service
I uaually get pasta, husband gets a steak
Their specialty is spaghetti prepared in a cheese round so the cheese melts all over the pasta
Friends tried it and said it was decadent and TOO MUCH, but it's fun
The door is at street level then you descend steep stairs to the dining room
