We are a family of 5, 2 adults, 12, 8 and 3 travelling to Greece and stopping over in Rome for 1 week July 1 - 8. Because of the number of kids we are keeping itinerary simple. For Rome:
. can you suggest an apartment that will allow us to be close proximity to sights so can go back for rest
. Are there any with pools?
. What would be a good add on if want to experience a different part of Italy
. What would be best area to base ourselves in
Thanks,

I have made reservations with www.rentalinrome.com and www.vbro.com for my feb trip.
so far communications with rentalinrome agent have been good. you can ask them to recommend you a good location for their available apartments if you are unsure based on the respective apartment maps.
for vbro, your communications are mostly directly with apartment owners. you have to search your own apartment. luckily, my Florence apartment owner accepts paypal payment during stay (no deposit or even full cash payment). so that is something to consider
personally, i have reserved an apartment near the spanish steps since it is central to most of the sights. Good luck.
Good lead above re VRBO.com (Vacation Rentals By Owners) - another resource is:
http://www.wantedinrome.com/clas/show_clas.php?op=showcat&id=11
These sources are free of agency fees and you will deal directly with the owners. You are coming at what is usually a very steamy, hot time of summer so be prepared - I liken the summer weather here to Washington, D.C. summers - hot and humid.
thank you!

Italy has a wealth of artisans, whose work is proudly displayed today throughout the country. Some of my favourites are:
~ Bernini, Gian Lorenzo (1598-1680)
~ Brunelleschi, Filippo (1377-1446)
~ Donatello (1386-1466)
~ Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)
~ Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564)
~ Palladio, Andrea (1508-1580)
If you'd like to fins out more re them, have a look at the website below.
An amazing testament of Italian genius! :)
Pope Gregory XIII had this new city gate built in 1574 and named it after the close basilica of S.Giovanni in Laterano (St John Lateran). This gate was one of the points of the pope's plan about the new roads and traffic in this zone of the city. The seven archways were opened in 1917 due to the demand of the traffic from the new districts of Rome.
ATAC is the official company for transport in Rome. The tickets can be bought from the automatic machines in any subway station and in most of the bus stations. 1 full fare ticket (BIT) is 1 eur and is valid for 75 minutes .. so it does not matter if you switch a bus or a metro to your destination, but you have to watch not to travel longer than the validity stated on the ticket (75 minutes from the time of you bought it on the machine). There is also a good option to take a day ticket (BIG), which is 4 eur and offers you posibility to travel as much as you want till midnight same day. Check the official ATAC website for useful info regarding lines, schedules, point-to-point etc.
The famous “Sicilian Cannoli” are made of wafer shells filled mainly with “ricotta” and a piece of candied fruit or chocolate. This shop sells all kind of sicilian pastries (like cassata siciliana ) and much more... the only advice I can give is... GO!!! They're so crunchy and sweet and wonderful!!!
