Credit Card vs. Cash
by kbsunnyside
Many hotels, shops, travel agencies, etc. do not take credit cards in Rome. This seems wacky to many Americans, but it's a fact. It's partly because the fees are sizeable and vendors don't get the money immediately.
If you're sticking to more expensive shops and restaurants or places frequented by Americans they'll probably take credit cards. A number of places may say they'll take a card, but then you'll be told the processing machine isn't working or your card is not being accepted.
I know everyone says take traveler's checks--but I note that the exchange rate on $100 bills is the best. It is better than travelers checks and better than $20 bills.

Campo de’Fiori, too late for the market, but lunch at the little restaurants in the market is not to be missed, and you're never too late to take a sip from this ancient looking forever running faucet.

Coming from ouside Italy: the Fiumicino apt is 40 minutes by car from the city center (new terminal just opened, end y2k); there's a train running from apt to the main station (Stazione Termini), you could rent a car but drivin in Rome is not so relaxing ... or get a taxi: for 40 euros you can go almost everywhere in the city.
More info about the airport @ www.adr.it
Underground is not so extended but it can drive you to right places where you can start walking ... and then just walk ... and walk ... and walk, this is the only way to get the feeling.
Moving from one site to another one requests a map but put it in your backpack when hanging around the historical (well, almost everything in Rome is historical ;-) areas: just try to get lost !
One of my favorite memories of Italy
by londonlover about Caffe Sant'Eustachio
Coffee shops aren't unusual in Rome, but two are noted to be a class above the rest. One is the Tazza d'Oro, but it was closed the day we stopped by, so I can't make a comparison. However, I don't think it could have been any better than Sant' Eustachio...the best--absolute best--espresso I've ever had. No bitterness, rich flavor, and a foamy top (no cream, they claim!) that is their secret trademark. The frozen espresso with whipped cream is spectacular--shaved ice, espresso, and whipped cream layered together. Nothing here is cheap, but it's worth it! They also sell espresso cups and other items with their trademark logo on it.
Audience with Pope John Paul
by pjt0309
Check the tours available and you will find there is a Wednesday a.m. tour to Vatican that will allow you to have Papal audience. It is not a private audience, but in the same room with the Pope and his immediate staff. Quite thrilling to be so close to the Pope.
Very cheap tour.
