Well, this will not help any one else I am afraid, but for us it is the best accommodation in Italy:-)And if you are REALLY lucky, you may be able to borrow Matthew's tractor for your transport.

There are five categories of...

There are five categories of hotels, graded by stars, from five down to one. Pensioni are family-style boarding houses, often with more character and a homelier atmosphere than hotels; but they will offer fewer facilities and may not have a reastaurant. Day Hotels: this handy italian institution, often situated close to major railway stations, does not provide overnight accomodation, but offers practical facilities for delightfully low prices. You can freshen up with a shower or bath, leave luggage or parcels, have a haircut, manicure, have your laundry done or take a few hours to rest. Convents and monasteries: some roman catholic orders take in guests at very reasonable rates. They offer comfortable rooms as well as meals. Inns: there may not be a basin or hot water but prices are very low.

Star Hotel Hostel. Clean,...

Star Hotel Hostel. Clean, close to everything and cheap. For a single person, a hostel is a much finer experience than a hotel. Intermingling with travellers from everywhere in an intimate setting is great. And so cheap!
$15 a night!
30,000 lira, $15.

Real handy to everything.

I stayed at the ''Hotel Europa'', on Via Varese and they were really helpful with my enquiries. Also the hotel was very central , only about 300 meters to the train station.
It was easy to navigate the city from the hotel.
IT COST ME $ 45.OO A NIGHT, I booked thru the ''HOTEL SHOP''-online In London.

THE PRICE WAS RIGHT, GREAT FOR SOMEONE ON A BUDGET LIKE MYSELF.

We stayed at hotel Genova in Via Cavour. It's not the best side of town, but its conviniently close to the train station.

The breakfast wasn't much to write home about, if you wouldn't write about lazy waitors. The room were clean, with showers and aircondition. Aircondition was an absolute must in July.

Hotel Dino: We stayed at Hotel Dino...

We stayed in the Hotel Dino just around the corner from the Central Station in Rome.

It wasn't a very nice hotel but it was all we could find without walking for hours. The street below was noisy all night and we had trouble sleeping.

I would find somewhere different next time for sure...I suggest you do the same if it's still there... :)

Le Grand Hotel, Rome: Le Grand Hotel, Rome

This is a very traditonal hotel. The hotel bar lounge is on the lobby floor. There was a colorful Christmas tree in the center, when I stayed there. The furniture are fine antique as well as all the architecture of the hotel. There's also a gorgeous chandelier on the ceiling. My room was common wide with pretty chandelier and refined furniture.

We stayed in pension type...

We stayed in pension type lodging which was very cheap. We were 'found' at the Termini station by a 'hotel broker' who found us accommodation at the level we were prepared to pay, she brought us there and presumably earned commision from the hotel for doing so as there was no charge to us. Accommodation was central although basic.

I stayed at the Mascagni hotel at Via Veveto. It was wonderful and the rooms were good and the service exellent. There are plenty of hotels around the city centre, all near the sites in good positions. Here is the web page for the lovely hotel i stayed at.......http://www.venere.com/it/roma/mascagni/index.html.
It was about £50 a person a night, well worth it. Here is the hotel we stayed in.The rooms were beautiful and spotless.

The Provincial and State tourist boards can provide advice on accomodation.tel06-48 89 92 55 .It is open from 8.15-7.15pm mon-fri.For a treat, stay at the Majestic hotel where Madonna has stayed.Expensive, but it is beautiful.tel-06-48 68 41.

We rented an apartment on the Via Farnese. It was the ideal location to see all of Rome.
In US dollars, $180 per night

Wonderful neighborhood, within walking distance to everything. Decorated with beautiful antiques. Very comfortable accomodations. Very quiet neighborhood.

You don't need to stay in a 5 star hotel to be comfortable. We found a pensione above the shops in the Piazza Republica which was clean, cheap, comfortable and central to all the sights. You can see the window of our room on the second level of the building behind the fountain in the picture below.

We stayed at the Albergo Santa Prisca, which was in the same courtyard as a convent. The first morning we were there, we were woken very early by the nuns singing their matins! It's a clean and comfortable hotel in a quiet location in Aventine neighbourhood
I can't remember - it was 9 years ago but we couldn't afford much back then so it was pretty cheap

The hotel was nothing special,...

The hotel was nothing special, but all hotels are quite expensive in Rome and the rooms tend to be short of space.
The area surrounding the railway station is probably the best value and within a 20 minute walk of the colisseum.

Fairly quiet for Rome which tends to be faily noisy at night.
