“Rome has grown since its humble beginnings that it is now overwhelmed by its own greatness.”
—Titus Livius (59-17 BC)
Hotel Nazionale is centrally located in Piazza Montecitorio. This situation contributes to great safety because the hotel is next to a building of the Italian Parliament. Because of its proximity to the House of Deputies the hotel is often booked with government officials and diplomatic staff.
At the center of Piazza Montecitorio is Obelisco di Montecitorio (Obelisk of Montecitorio, see photo #5), an ancient Egyptian, red granite obelisk. Pharaoh Psammetichus II (595-589 BC) had the obelisk erected at Heliopolis; it was brought to Rome in 10 BC by Emperor Augustus. It is 71 feet high; when the base and the globe are included the height measures 111 feet. The Column of Marcus Aurelius is close by too.
The Pantheon is just a minute away on foot; and Fontana di Trevi, Piazza Navona, the Spanish Steps, Piazza Venezia, Piazza del Popolo and Via Condotti are close enough. Rome is a compact city, easy to walk everywhere.
If you ask for a room at the front of the hotel you will have a view over Piazza Montecitorio, a spacious and quiet square. In addition to the House of Deputies, other hotels are located on this piazza, which is car-free.
Our room was small, with just enough space between the wall & the bed; but the ceiling was high, helping to give the room a more spacious feel. The view out over the rooftops of Rome was magical, though (see photo #4). This view is at the rear of the hotel, with the dome of St. Peter’s in the distance.
The staff is professional and helpful. Breakfast is included in the room price.
Unique Quality: Central location. Safe area.
The Nationale is impressive without being intinidaing and offers a fantastic location from which to explore Rome. It is within easy walking distance of the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain etc. and more importantly you dont have to wander far in the evening to find a decent restaurant.
The furthest trip was to the Vatican/St Peters but we took a taxi to save the 45min walk and make sure we arrived early to beat the queues.
A Nice First Class Hotel In The City Center
Built in the year 1400, the 87-room Hotel Nazionale a Montecitorio is housed in a 16th century palace and is located in the historic center of Rome.
This is the corporate hotel of the current European financial institution I'm with. And this is where I would stay when I'm in Rome (from 2001 onwards).
Unique Quality: This hotel is within walking distance to our main banking branch in Rome... including the Pantheon and Spanish Steps.
Directions: If you are arriving from the Leonardo da Vinci Airport, expect to pay €40-€60 for your cab fare to the hotel. From Ciampino Airport, you pay approx €60-€65 for cab fare. The indicative price I've listed is the latest (Aug 2006).
