Eating Gelato
by roamer61
When in Rome,or anywhere in Italy for that matter, one must partake of the Gelato the city is known for. It comes in a wide variety of flavors and can be found throughout the city in anyone of numerous shops selling the frozen treats. Its a perfect snack for a hot day or a refreshing treat to eat in the afternoon or evening.
The Capuchin crypt--a little...
by noahsdad
The Capuchin crypt--a little creepy, but it reminds you of the shortness of life. So get out there and live a little! Ostia--Rome's ancient port, silted up and perfectly preserved. There are temples, warehouses, shops, restaurants, inns, baths, homes, and a theatre (or ruins of all of the above). It's greener and shadier than Pompeii, but the effect is similar. There are some absolutely stunning mosaics. And sunflowers.
Think Twice (Part II)

Sandi (my traveling partner) began to feel her fingers tighten on the steering wheel, and her body tense, as we approached the city center of Rome. We had received very specific instructions on how and where to find the rental office. Unfortunately, the instructions did not know about road construction and detours. By the time I (the navigator) found where we were on the Hertz map...we were 10 streets away. Luckily, they had told us we could return the car to any of their convenient locations in Rome. After an hour of being honked and sworn at, we decided we were close to an alternate drop off location. Sandi being the good trooper that she was, stayed calm, cool and collected. Following my directions to the alternate location, we suddenly found ourselves right back at Villa Borghese...the original drop off spot! Go figure!
Note: We would have never known in a million years that the drop off spot was here, had we not been told by our previous hotel. There is not a single sign to indicate the Hertz drop off spot is located under Villa Borghese. You will finally see a sign for Hertz when you pull in the underground city center parking garage.
Check out my Florence page for Part I, the rental pick up.
Collesium Restuarant
by Randy121 about Gran Caffe Rossi Martini
We found this nice restuarant right across the street from the collesium.
We sat outside and had our dinner with drinks while watching the sunset and Collesium.
Awesome! The food was okay but the atmosphere was the best!
Heart of Rome

This piazza seems to be the traffic center of Rome. We stopped here for a refreshing beer and some great people watching - there were people everywhere, cars from all directions and of course hundreds of the ubiquitous Vespas. In the center of it all, on a pedastal in the middle of the intersection was a traffic cop dressed in black trousers, white shirt, helmet and gloves. Watching him direct (?) the traffic, we felt that there should be some lively and grand symphony as background to amplify his dramatic waves, whistles and gestures. The piazza also faces the huge Victor Emmanuel monument and the balcony from which Mussolini delivered his ranting speeches and stirred up the Fascists into a rabid mass.
