Absolutely the worse place I have ever stayed. The very pleasant looking pictures and description on the website bear no resemblance to reality.

The website shows apartments with wood floors, sofas and fully equipped kitchen and a roof terrace. The reality was a bed-sit room (studio), with a double bed with a badly stained padded headboard. Inches from the bed was a sink, fridge and ring top stove. There were a couple of plates and scuffed up pans and not one piece of cutlery - this was the fully equipped kitchen. There was also a tiny cupboard that was supposed to be a wardrobe for two!

The air con didnt work. Despite two complaints to the manager it wasnt looked at during our 3 night stay. There were two wall lights above the bed, one didnt work the other was hanging off showing bare wires.

The bathroom was very small with the shower doors coming off the rollers. The loo seat wasnt fixed on so regularly fell off.

The roof terrace was a small square area with one plastic table - not the terrace with container plants and rows of tables of chairs shown in the website.

Finally, the room we had was on the 3rd floor. There was no lift, which we already knew about but the stairs were very steep and made of stone which made the stairwell very loud and echo-ey. There were no apparent fire safety regulations in force - with only one set of internal stairs and not a fire exit or extinguisher in sight.

Payment was demanded in cash on check in. I guess this is because if you saw the room prior to paying you would leave immediately.

Avoid at all cost. No redeeming qualities whatsoever.

the porta maggiore is one of the gates to the ancient city of rome. it is part of the aqua claudia aqueduct built by emperor claudius in 52AD. in the 3rd century AD the aqua claudia was bricked over to form a part of the aurelian wall.

The two arches of the Porta Maggiore, a gate to the city, were originaly part of an aquaduct built by emperor Claudius in the year 52.
In total water in 6 different aquaducts came into Rome at the Porta Maggiore.
Under the huge citygate you can see the old basalt road. Deep trenches of the carriages can easily be identified in the black stones.

I’m pretty sure very few people have considered this monument, since it’s situated in a not very central zone, artistically speaking. Porta Maggiore in fact was formerly a section of the Claudian acqueduct, and later on was embodied in the 3rd century Aurelian walls and became one of the main entrances of the city. The present section bears inscriptions from the time of the Emperors Vespasian (69-79 A.D.) and Titus (79-81 A.D.), who restored the acqueduct in 71 and 81 A.D. You can still see the original basalt roadway beneath the gate.

Any experiences of the 'Zeus Residences'?

Hi,

Has anyone stayed at the Zeus Residences, Via Di Porta Maggiore?

Their website is offering a good deal (240Euros for 3 nights) for 2, rooms with own kitchen ect. All looks well on the website, but has anyone any experience of this one as I cant seem to find any reviews.

(And I've tried availabilty at lots of the hotels recommended on the VT Rome pages, but most places are booked as we're arriving next weekend).

We have just come back from Rome this weekend and have been staying at the Hotel Gea on via Nationale (the Termini end of via Nationale). I booked online and it was 90 Euros a double per night including a hearty breakfast each morning. There is a supermarket about 50 metres away, very well stock with pre-made salads, breads, cold meats, cheeses, antipasta, fresh fruit and cold drinks. Also a delicious pizza shop next to the night entrance of the hotel. I hope they have vacancies as I can recommend it. Happy holiday.

Where can I start?

The front desk staff weren't friendly at all.

Yes we were college kids, whom they thought were American & once found out we were Canadian their "tune" changed.

The elevator doors did not shut all the way & when you rode in them you could see out about a 1/2 inch.

The rooms were larger but not pretty at all.

The bathrooms were a treat - our tub did not drain.

We awoke to our shutters open & male workers on scaffolding looking in - kind of freaky.

The piano bar was nothing special, neither was breakfast - few meats & cheeses as well as juices.

Car bombing outside of the hotel as well the second day!

Quite the experience for myself, one I will never forget.

Unique Quality: There was a cute little terrace you could sit out on.

As well, the location was great for the Colosseum, as a bus stop was directly out front.

Hotel PORTAMAGGIORE (No pic of the hotel, but here is something to look at! Piazza Navano, i believe...)
About $90 a nite, breakfast included, for two.

Unique Quality: Not far from subway station and trams were RIGHT outside the door. VERY close to the major train station as well. Has AC and ELEVATORS. Clean, but small rooms. Not too noisey. Great restaurant nearby.
