Many hotels, shops, travel agencies, etc. do not take credit cards in Rome. This seems wacky to many Americans, but it's a fact. It's partly because the fees are sizeable and vendors don't get the money immediately.If you're sticking to more expensive shops and restaurants or places frequented by Americans they'll probably take credit cards. A number of places may say they'll take a card, but then you'll be told the processing machine isn't working or your card is not being accepted.
I know everyone says take traveler's checks--but I note that the exchange rate on $100 bills is the best. It is better than travelers checks and better than $20 bills.
