Rome to Switzerland
by abhisaar
Hi,
I need to travel from Rome to Bern or Zurich. I hear that the trip across the mountains is very picturescue. Which trains or buses can i take. Is it worth a trip taking or should i just take a flight ?
Re: Rome to Switzerland
by leics
It is not really a matter of which train you should take...you will have to take the trains which go to Berne or Zurich.
http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html
will give you times, details and fares in English.
I would always choose to travel by train where possible, simply because you see so much more than when flying.
If there is a long-distance bus (coach) then www.eurolines.com will give you times and fares. Train will be faster and much more comfortable than travelling by coach.

North of Milano the countryside gets very beautiful indeed. Trains to Bern usually take the Lötschberg (via Stresa-Brig) route, trains to Zürich the Gotthard (via Como-Lugano) route.
Travel Tips for Rome
Church of St. Peter in Chains
by seagoingJLW
Near the Colosseum is the church of St. Peter in Chains which is the tomb of Pope Julius II. The pope wanted to be entombed at St. Peter's, but he angered too many people. They honored his wish by placing him at St. Peter in Chains. Michelangelo sculpted his Moses for Pope Julius' tomb. See the exquisite sculpture.
When in Rome, Where to Jog?
by Lacristina
So you brought your running shoes to Rome? Well, if walking ten miles a day just doesn't get your heart pumping enough, and you need your endorphin fix, the best place in Rome to run is the Villa Borghese. It's the big green expanse that appears just to the northeast of the Spanish Steps on most Rome maps. It's lovely, green, peaceful, and usually not very crowded, especially early in the morning. Most of your fellow joggers will be expat Brits and Americans. But I once actually saw an Italian woman jogging. I know because she was wearing a matching silk top and silk scarf! Really!
For a great view, run over to the Pincio Gardens as far west as you can, to the Piazza del Popolo Overlook. WOW!
The park is home to many sites, most important of which is the Galleria Borghese, which you MUST go see, even if it's your first trip. Please see my tip on the Galleria Borghese - you'll be so glad you went! Just your shoes and shorts. But please, don't go shirtless. The Romans will be horrified!
Night Lights
by Pawtuxet about Piazza Di Spagna
After dinner, take a walk around one of the squares or piazzas. Seeing the city and the buildings illuminated at night gives a totally different impression of the city. Who needs nightclubs when you have a show like this one?
Excellent restaurant in Rome
by lesgarcia about Nana Vini e Cucina
We highly recommend the restaurant Naná Vini e Cucina, this is by far the best restaurant we visited in Italy, we give it an excellent rating, we had dinner there two nights in a row. The food is Napolitana, the service is one of the best we’ve experienced in any country, the food is excellent, the kitchen is visible from the dining area through large glass window, the setting is in a romantic alley near the Fontana Trevi. Reservations are not required but recommended if you don’t like waiting while sipping the complimentary sparkling wine. The address is Via Della Panetteria 37, Telephone: 06-69-19-07-50. Seafood salad, fried seafood platter, rizzoto, & more
Gelato at Giolitti's
by icunme about GIOLITTI'S
Gelato heaven! Many will tell you that this is the best gelato in Rome and it is indisputedly at the top of the list. Gilotti is always buzzing - pay for your portion first - then wait for someone to serve you. History here dates to 1890 - details on their website.
My personal favorite is still the little Fior di Luna in Trastevere - a very unique flavor to their gelato. Join the extreme gelato challenge and find your personal favorite - great fun!
