Wonderful experience at the San Remo
by TripAdvisor Member murphy-hupp
My daughter and I stayed at the San Remo 11/28 to 12/1/05 booked through "go-today". After reading previous postings on this hotel we were a little concerned. What a pleasant surprise! We were in room 509 with a large window opening into a lightwell which made our room very quiet. The room was very clean with Pergo flooring. The beds were comfortable and the linen was changed daily. We had a large bathtub w/shower with plenty of hot water. The continental breakfast was more than adequate. The location was the best due to it's proximity to the Termini, Metro and bus system. It was easy walking distance to the hotel from the Termini with our luggage. The front desk personnel were outstanding ... especially the young man that worked the first four days of our stay ... always a friendly greeting and smile when we came through the lobby. I would recommend this hotel to others and would stay there again.
Cheap but not good value

3 night stay chosen for a discounted price. Room was small and tired on the 4th floor. Hot water was rare - normally luke warm or cold. One small busy lift. Miserable staff. Average location - needed a bus or tube to go anywhere. Would not stay again out of choice.

Not sure if the bad reviews on this page even stayed at the same hotel to be honest, the Hotel San Remo is an excellent affordable base for you whilst exploring Rome. If you are looking for a 5* hotel with all the trimings then you won't find it here. However for those looking for a nice clean, well located and comfortable base for you to store your belongings and get a good nights sleep after lots of walking then this is definately the place. The staff were all polite and although not fluent in english you still could easliy communicate. The rooms were quite big with the most comfortable beds I have slept in for ages (we wanted to bring it home!!) bathroom was a decent size with a shower over the bath that was in perfect working order, the maids cleaned and replenished toilet rolls, tissue and fully cleaned the whole room.
The continental breakfast was good with bread, meat, cheese, yoghurt, cakes, cerial and juices on offer. There was also a waiter bringing you tea and coffee when you first arrived in the morning (between 7am-10am).
The Hotel itself is an excellent choice and you can literally see the termini bus station from the hotel entrance. Also it is right in the middle of loads of restaurants and shops, my girlfriend and I went shopping and ended up walking to the Roman Forum without realising (probably a 2-3mile walk from the Hotel). As the hotel is by the Termini bus station it is also easy to choose from the 2-3 tour buses (110open top bus was our choice which was 13euros for the day)
Ignore the moaners, you can't please everyone it seems!!

Thew San Remo is ok. Nothing special but if you just want a reasonably priced base from which you can explore Rome, it is perfectly satisfactory.
The rooms are clean, the bed linen and en suite towels are changed every day.
There are no coffee/tea making facilities in the rooms but you can get a coffee from the bar for a couple of euros.
There is no hot water until 6 am but after that there is ample.
There is a hair dryer in the en suite.
The continental breakfast is fine.
Decent Hotel Located Neat the Train Station

Overall I found this a nice clean hotel. It was about what I expected from a 3 star tourist grade hotel. Our room was clean but a little tired from use. Bathroom was fine and service was good. Breakfast was decent standard fare.
I thought the location was good. Easy access to trains, subways, and the bus. I like to walk and never used public transportation to see any sites I visited. Ancient City, Vatican, Pantheon and other sites were within a mile or two and easily accessible on foot.
just right for budget traveler

Booked sight unseen thru Virgin Atlantic tours. Short walk from Termini train station in safe neighborhood. Clean hotel. Staff reserved but the man at the desk kindly put minutes on my Italian cell phone (italian phone menus etc.)
Clean bedroom c street view. Simple rooms. Simple clean bathroom. No frills. But in Rome you'd be crazy to spend any time in your hotel room anyway.
Continental breakfast. Also simple no frills.

We spent 5 nights in this hotel. We had a very pleasant stay. We had a very nice spacious bedroom. We found the hotel staff very pleasant and very helpful, especially Reception Staff. We had a slight problem getting HOT Tea at breakfast, though the coffee was delicious. For a hotel in its class we found it very good value for money and in a very quiet, central location.
Very Convenient, but?????

My wife and I and two friends, have just returned from a 5 night stay, and having read the previous hit and miss reports, were quite apprehensive.
It seems as though it is a matter of luck whether you get a good room or not at this hotel, as standards seem quite varied.
Although we booked at the same, together, and in plenty of time, our friends were located in a large twin comfortable room, while my wife and I had a pokey room, which should have been a single, and therefore resticted in furniture, and overlooked a dismal and noisy ventilation shaft!
We did change to a much better room after two days, when one eventually became available, but could be a problem in high season.
Also, it appears that ALL shower cubicles are in a pretty poor state.
Breakfasts are quite basic, but could be improved if the staff could just get their act together in replenishing items when empty. Not a clue!!
Our party are mainly in our early 60's, and found this hotel certainly walkable from the Rail/bus station, although pavements very uneven for suitcases. Otherwise a very convenient location. Bus No. 64 wil take you(like a sardine!) to most inportant places.

We had 4 nights in the San Remo hotel in Rome. The location is good, close to Termini station, access to all places. The hotel room itself was basic and clean. The staff did not really speak any english except for one lady. There were never enough tables for breakfast and when you came a bit later, most of the food was gone. Qauality/price comparison was average due to good location.
Good location but needs help

The location was excellent for finding restaurants, internet and travel connections. I was alone and therefore got a very small room with an extremely small bathroom. It was functional however after sight seeing for 7-9 hours a day, it would have been nice not to feel so cramped in when you are tired and did not want to sit in a bar or cafe. There was a small area off the "'reception" where there were some uncomfortable chairs with little/no ambiance. The room and linens were clean. The only English TV channel was CNN but had some good movies, but only in Italian! I would warn people when going out for a meal, to ask about the "cover charge". Sometimes it was as high as 7Euros tagged onto the bill, even for a coffee! Internet was cheap. Ask for the cost of items when buying a few things. Count your money when you get your change. I frequently was overcharged or was given change for 10 Euros when in fact I gave 20 Euros.

Thanks for the info. It's on Via M. D'Azeglio 36. I guess that would be a couple of blocks from the station. Thanks, Mary
