Spanish Steps (Scalinata di Spagna)
The steps are a great meeting place and a chance to rest your weary feet. Unfortunately you can’t eat or drink or you will be told off! There are some expensive designer shops at the base.

The Spanish Steps or the "Scalinata di Spagna" are rather crowded I must say. The lure of the fountain at the base of the steps keeps people there at any given hour of the day. There is some gelati to be had around the area. Most alluring of all are the many high-end shops that make their home nearby. There are some flower vendors, restaurants, and jewelry stores around. There are also the usual clothing stores.
Colorful flowers grow in large pots by the side of the steps. Youngsters mill around smoking, chatting with friends. Its a relaxing atmosphere that is a good respite from the heavy go go go environment that Rome is acccustomed.
The Piazza di Spagna is named such because the Spanish Embassy was once headquartered there. Climb the Spanish Steps and you will find yourself in front of a church. From the vantage point here at the Trinità dei Monti, you can gaze down the Scalinata di Spagna and just watch the people going about their business.
Climate: Climates in the north and south vary. Although Italy is in a Temperate Zone, summers can be very hot and dry in the south, and winters can be very cold in the north (mountainous regions especially). In April through June, and September through October, prices are lower, tourism is less, and the weather is on its best behavior.

Not properly a 'nightlife' spot, the Piazza di Spagna area is a good place to stroll around when dusk falls - but concepts of day and night can vary a lot throughout the year in Europe, and you want to stay away from this place in summer when it gets dark at 11pm. It's a place to have dinner or a gelato, shop, or just see the sites. The stairways (Scalinata di Spagna) are always filled with young people, and the international tourists are everywhere...
The Scalinata di Spagna or Spanish Steps have been a meeting place for Romans and visitors alike for several centuries. The steps and their associated piazza take their names from the Spanish Embassy, which was formerly located on the site. Built in the early 1700s, the stairway is a great place to spend a sunny afternoon of excellent people-watching and don't forget your gelati!

Hi Everyone. I'll be in Rome over New Years. Does anyone know of any special events that my mother and I can attend? We'd like to celebrate New Years Eve and Day the Italian way. Any suggestions? Also, we'd like to stay around the Spanish Steps and prefer a 4 star hotel. Any recommendations? Thanks a bunch for taking the time to answer.
Hj, my name is Massimo and my work is showing the town of Rome privatly by new minivan.
I can suggest hotel "Scalinata di Spagna" for your hotel as it is located right on top of the Spanish steps as you call them the american way,and it is a good hotel
Ciao
Massimo
Thanks Max. I've actually been considering that hotel, so it's good to get a personal recommendation.
My husband & I are planning our first trip to Italy for October--My 40th birthday!! We were considering the Hotel Scalinata di Spagna--want something small and intimate with easy access for long strolls. Any opinions about this or other locations? Will be staying 4-5 nights then traveling to Venice. Doesn't have to be inexpensive but don't want to have to sell my car:)
Thanks for your expertise!
Small and intimate is the Navona Suites, located about one block from Piazza Navona within the smaller Piazza Pasquino. My travelpage hotel tip for Rome has the Navona Suites information and pictures. My wife and I enjoyed the strolls in and around the area, which includes the Piazza Navona, Campo di Fiori, and the Pantheon locations. Trastevere is a wonderful stroll from the suite as well as to Castel Sant'Angelo. One of the longer strolls was to the Spanish Steps at about 30 minutes. We are returning again, soon.
We have loved staying at the Hotel Residenza, Via Emilia 22. It meets everything in your criteria and then some. I have a few pictures on my Roma Travel Page.

Can't go wrong at Scalinata...the place is great.
Scalinata is a classic place to stay. Our friends stayed at the Residenza and loved it. Both well located. You aren't going to go wrong at either place.
Any suggestions for a great pension in Rome for two women - near Spanish Step or other central location? Thanks
Hi
The Spanish Steps is an excellent location and the Pension Panda http://www.hotelpanda.it - gets good reviews. You'll be lucky to find something of better value. Book early.
Ciao
I have just finished booking apartments in Rome, Florence and Sorrento. The price of these apartments are better then most pensions, just like staying in a timeshare resort. Not as luxurious but many amenities.
Contact Rentalsinrome and click on the price range you would like. I had to pay through Paypal. We will be traveling in March.
I second the first suggestion for Pensione Panda - now called Hotel Panda, it's definitely a great option! A little hidden gem in a great area - it's simple but has everything you need (except maybe a television...FYI) For the busy April period around Easter I was quoted Euro 68 for double with shared bath and Euro 88 for double with private bath. they are very friendly and had great customer service from my experience. Email them directly to request a rate - often they will be better than the automatic rate on the website.
website: www.hotelpanda.it
It has good photos and reviews from real users on TripAdvisor also. Check it out on their website www.tripadvisor.com (go to Rome and enter "Hotel Panda")
Ciao e buon viaggio!
This place is great...a bit pricey, but literally at the top of the steps. You can't go wrong. The place is fantastic. It is called Hotel Scalinata. http://www.hotelscalinata.com/
