Best place to stay near Rome Airport for a 8am flight

by Pittsburgh_Bob

We have an 8am flight out of Fiumicino airport. We were planning to spend the night before near the airport. Can anyone give us any suggestions where to stay? Since all we are really going to do is sleep there, I really do not want to spend a fortune. Any suggestions would be great.

Another question, how hard will it be to get to the airport at that hour. I assume we need to get there a few hours before departure. Is that goint to be a problem?

As always... Thanks for all your fantastic help.

Other than staying at the Hilton at the airport you will need to get a taxi or shuttle anyway. I stayed at the Marriot which is close by, but still you need a taxi. I was able to get the Hilton to match the room rate the Marriot was charging simply by asking nicely in an e mail. Last year we stayed our last night in Rome at the Hotel Lancelot by the Colosseum. I had an early morning flight and had no problem getting to the airport. The taxi charge to and from Rome central is a fixed fee. Karl

Karl is absolutely right. Just stay in your hotel in Rome and get a taxi. Your hotel desk clerk will order one for you and I have never had an early morning taxi not turn up on time. In actual fact, they are usually early. I did this one time when I was leaving Rome and made it to Ciampino in heaps of time to check in for a 7.00am flight. It's no big deal. And don't forget, when you ask the desk clerk to order a taxi for you, ask him/her to book a wake up call for you as well.

Travel Tips for Rome

Traditional Rome

by Jenniflower

Rome is heavily visited by tourists on the one hand, and on the other hand, is refreshingly uncommercialised.

Here is a sign for a shop, where you can get all yoru miscellaneous needs.. from fruit to bread, loo paper to cleaning liquid.

The insides of these shops are like little mini-mazes themselves too... so unlike the huge, glossy wide aisles in England and South Africa (the two countries I have lived in so can compare with).

Impressive and Old Ruins

by Laura_Mexico

If you'll be staying in Rome for a while and have enough time to take a look to the surroundings too, make sure to take a train to the Ostia Antica ruins, which are only 25 minutes away from Rome (to the south west) and are HUGE and impressive. There are trains that go there many times a day, departing from the Roma Ostiense train station (next to the PIRAMIDE metro station) or the EUR-Magliana station.

Don't bother to rent a car.

It's incredibly easy to get around Rome using the metro system. Driving looked downright scary and finding a place to park impossible. Plus, the price of gasoline was insane! We found that an all day metro pass for 4 euro worked just fine for all of the sightseeing we did. Most things were within a couple of blocks of the metro stop and easy to get to.

Only bad thing: avoid the metro during the week during afternoon rush hour. It's incredibly crowded (think sardines) and all of those bodies smashed together on a warm sunny afternoon... well, it reeks!!!

High Quality, Low Price

by npsdguy about alla Rampa

This is near the Spanish Steps. It looks small from the outside, but it's huge on the inside. The food is fresh, local and great prices. It's also cash only, but two can eat well for less than 40 Euros. It's right next door to another restaurant where the food is terrible - so make sure you choose the right one! The menu is extensive and they give you time to choose. I had the rabbit dish one night, which was great. The best dessert are the profiteroles with hot chocolate sauce - yum!

Vatican

by Tom_In_Madison

I won't even try to top some of the great sites on the Vatican that are on this board. I'll simply say the building is the most beautiful one I've ever seen. It's huge inside and art, statues everywhere.

The most beautiful sculpture has to be La Pieta. It's right on the right when you walk in, behind bulletproof glass. Michaelangelo did it of course. I could look at it for hours. Look at her hands, you can see where he sculpted the veins right there into the stone. The type of marble is something you don't see everyday either.
