CREDIT CARDS

by kaztez60

Need comments/advice on giving credit card details in a word document. Apparently, the B&B where we are intending to stay in the Trastevere area have requested the details on the booking form (word document) - not to pay for the accommodation up front - but for guarantee only. Is it safe to give my credit card details this way?

Re: CREDIT CARDS

by unaS

I have had that situation before. Printed out the form and filled it in as requested, then faxed it rather than sending it by email as an attachment.

This is a pretty standard procedure. Deposit means you reserve the room, balance is paid when you stay.

una is right that you can fax it (the phone lines are protected by strong government laws as opposed to the Internet, or you could do the following:

1. Send them an email saying that you are going to send them the booking information in a second email, and they will need a password to open it, and then give them the password.
2. Under Tools->Options->Security, save the Word document with this password.
3. Email them the now encrypted Word document as an attachment.

Sending the password and the encrypted document separately defeats most hackers except for the CIA, and if they really wanted your credit card info, they'd already have it ;-)

All that being said, if you have a problem with the charges, contact your credit card company and dispute the charges. I've never had any issues with a credit card, but my trick is that I have a card that I use only for booking things / buying things over the internet. This card has a very low credit limit.

I think it's safe for you. They need something to guarantee them that their client will show up.

Use one card only for the deposit and inform that credit card company in advance of the amount of the deposit and ask them to not allow any other charges to that particular B&B or any other charges. Take along another credit card for purchases and an ATM card so you can pay in cash when you are there. Be sure to inform your card companies of your travel dates so the use of your cards aren't 'frozen' when you're in Europe.

I wouldn't send it to them. I would call the B&B directly and give them the number on the phone.

Travel Tips for Rome

Walk as much as possible and soak up as much of that city as you can , because it is one big museum out in the open. The day I took this picture is was a very foggy day ,it was quite nice being it very foggy...

It doesnt matter, they'll know you're a tourist.

Romans dress up for everything. Italians don't wear shorts or flipflops. Most women wear dresses all the time and the men always wear slacks, never shorts. Seeing how nicely they dress can make you a little self concious. Don't worry. Just pack some of your nicer, more comfortable clothes and you will be fine. In the evening a nice dress will blend in and for men a nice pair of pants with a button shirt will always work.. As far as shoes go, bring something that is already "broken in". White tennis shoes are not very popular in Rome. I bought a tan pair that were very cool looking and did fine. You can get great walking shoes at any mall, and believe me, you will need them. Dont wear heels while exploring Rome or you will pay the price. All the cobbles make it a really bad choice not matter how nice they look. A hat in the summer is a good idea also, and not just for men. Clothing that can be layered is the way to go in Rome. For women, in the summer, sleeveless tops for outside with a large scarf or a lightweight shirt ( with sleeves) for churches will do fine. Capri pants or a skirt is also a good choice, as you are not allowed to show your knees inside church out of respect. For men, those pants that have the zip off legs is a great way to go. Just put the legs on for any church and you're set. In the winter, layering is a must. The mornings and evenings can be quite cold, yet the afternoons can warm up quite a bit. I have found that long-sleeved T's, cardigan sweaters and a mid weight jacket work well. Again, dont forget good, broken in shoes!! Don't forget to bring the sunscreen! The sun in Rome is very strong. Not only will it make you very hot, but it will easily cause you to burn. As for shampoo, soap, etc.... email your hotel and ask if they supply these and other toiletries. If you don't need to bring them, it makes it much easier to pack. As far as photo equipment is concerned, I bring my digital SLR and two 512 memory cards. I also bring a laptop that I can download all my pics to at night. I have stopped taking my film camera because I hated carrying around all that film. Memory cards, card reader and laptop are much easier for me carry and I can play games on the plane on the trip over. If you don't have a laptop or are hard up for space, you can use an ipod as a storage device instead. Any ipod will work, but the ipod videos are the only ones that will let you view your pics in color. Just download your memory card as needed and you're all set. The more memory the ipod has, the more pics it will hold. This is a great solution if you are on a daytrip to pompeii and are worried about a small memory card. Just take your ipod with you and download as needed. You can listen to music on the train and store all your photos during the day so you never miss a shot.

Movie memorabilia

by Paisleypaul about Profondo Rosso

This is the shop belonging to the famed Roman director Dario Argento (father of Asia Argento) named after the famous 1975 David Hemmings film ( you can link to http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073582/ ). Known for horror films such as Inferno, Suspria and Dawn of the Dead (producer) the Italian thriller style giallo films are the ones that he truly makes like no other. If you are a fan there is much here, if not the stock extends to memorabilia and action figures from Star Wars, Alien, Nightmare aon Elm Street and a lot more besides. Buy one of the excellent biographies of Argento or Mario Bava by Luigi Cozzi, Argento collaborator and director in his own right - - - as well as shop assistant ! Books less than Eu20 , action figures (I don't collect myself ) and memorabilia, to me, looked pricey

Trastevere Mini Bus in Piazza San Francisco

by icunme

If at all possible, take the little mini bus that you will see in Piazza San Francisco in Trastevere - this bus is at least half the size of the other buses you will see in Rome. When you ride this route, you will understand why - it will take you through the narrow streets of Trastevere and along the Tevere - just a charming ride - especially for those of us who are walk-weary in Rome! It is best seen in early evening when people are out in the little cafes. Below is the Fermata (bus stop) and a good description of the route - partly along the Tevere.

Excellent Tea, Cafe and Cuisine

by Jmill42 about The Verde

This is a recently opened cafe/tea bar/restaurant/shop close to the shopping of Via Condotti and the Spanish Steps. It has covered, but "outside" tables to eat, and an inside tea bar, with a shop at the other end. Its deserts are absolutely sublime and the main dish was just as good. A GREAT find. Gnocchi with 4 cheeses
Apple/cinnamon tart
