The Green Tiber
Another perspective slightly above the last view from inside the Castel. In Herman Melville's day he referred to the Tiber as "yellow as saffron." Things change in 150 years, sometimes not for the better.

My wife and I will be traveling to Rome arriving at 1400 on September 5. We will be staying in an apartment between St Peters and Stazione S. Pietro (reading map) Can someone help me with most economical and practical transportation from Rome airport to apartment? Thank you so much for your help. Ken & Maggie
Both Fiumicino and Ciampino airports have a Terravision coach service to Termini, which you may find the preferable option. Fiumicino also has the direct Leonardo Express train (9.5 euros one way) and there are local buses to both (and local stopping trains to Fiumicino). Details and links here:

Rome has an excellent public transport system (bus/tram/metro). If you go to
http://www.atac.roma.it/
click on th UK flag top right for the English version and then on the 'Routes and maps' link on the left-hand menu you will find a page of downloadable PDF route maps. From those you can plan exactly which metro (or bus) stop is going to be most convenient from Termini. A number of buses serve the area.
Of the two lines from the airport chose the one that brings you to Trastevere station. Change platform and take the line to S.Peter (will arrive within 20min max.) and get off at S.Peter, just one stop. The neighborood is plasant and safe.

There are actually two hot spots on Gianicolo to overview the city centre of Rome.
One is the more common one by the statue of Garibaldi where at noon the they fire an artillery piece.
The other is towards south (on your right hand side when looking at Rome) by the Embassy of Spain just in front of the monumental fountain of Paola (Fontana d’Acqua Paola).
Both sites will grant you a marvellous sight, esp. on sun rise!
Rome's bus system is easy to use and inexpensive. I believe a 3 day pass cost us around 20 euro each. You can use it as much as you like and it goes nearly everywhere. At Rome's main train station (Termini) you go out the front entrance and purchase your pass/ticket at the kiosks located outside, get on the bus to your destination and all is good. Where we live, we do not use mass transit/buses so we were a little apprehensive but, the bus stops have easy to figure out diagrams of the routes/destinations...I even figured out!
I have been going to this restaurant for nearly 8 years and have always had a fantastic evening and have never had a bad meal. I always get a warm welcome from the owner and the waiters who remember me every time.. The food had always been excellent and the ambience is typically Italian with all the buzz of the Piazza, street artists and candle light. I will always return here each time I come back to this amazing city and contrary to other opinions I would never hesitate in recommending this to anyone going to Rome. Try House antipasta - meats cheese, roasted vegetables and bread & Oils, Risotto fungi - huge depth in flavor and steak with pepper corns.. mmmmmmm
We really looked forward to visiting the 'city within the city'... the Vatican City.
Even from the far view of it from across the River Tiber, one is in awe of it's architecture and presence.
The Basilica of St. Peter started being built under the papacy of Julius II around 1506.
As you enter the basilica, you notice immediately how its functional layout is in the traditional form of a Latin cross.
