Tours of Vatican, St. Peter's, Sistine Chapel

by LlZZlE

We are traveling to Rome on our own. Do you think we should do a day tour of the Vatican, St. Peter's, and Sistine Chapel? Or do you think we should buy our tickets and go on our own.

I have read that there are sites you can buy your tickets in advance and skip the line...

If you would recommend a tour, what company? (website) THANKS!

This website will give you all the information you could ever need about visiting the Vatican and St Peters. You can easily organise your own day and then your time is your own.

http://www.saintpetersbasilica.org/touristinfo.htm

You'll find a link to a self-guided visit to St Peters on this site as well as links to the Vatican website where you'll find another link to the online tickets. It's all very user friendly.

I agree that you do not need a guided tour at all....although a good guidebook will help. There are, of course, information leaflets and guides avilable in English within the museum.

It makes sense to buy the Vatican Museum tickets in advance online, to avoid the queues. Use the official Vatican website here:

http://biglietteriamusei.vatican.va/musei/tickets/do

or there are other online agencies such as www.tickitaly.com

You cannot see the Sistine Chapel unless you go into the museums.

The queues for entry to St Peter's are for security scanning. There is no entrance fee and thus no way to buy tickets in advance. I suggest you visit in the late afternoon when, in my experience, queues are shorter.

Agree with not needing a "tour" and you can do it on your own. Good informational books or even Wikepedia will give you tons of information. The Vatican Museum has audio guides. I suppose if you'd like to know details on things such as the frescos and tapestries along the long hallways that lead up to the Sistine Chapel, then go with a guided tour. Try your best to enjoy Michaelangelo's painting despite the guards constantly shushing people (since people don't understand what "no talking" means!) and shouting "silenzio" when it gets too loud! Good memories. Have fun and enjoy Roma. It is, perhaps, my favorite city in the world.

Travel Tips for Rome

a page in history...

by peitsing

Of course, a visit to Rome is not complete without makin a trip to the Colossuem coz...

1. it's one of my absolute fav buidling on earth, despite friends commentin that I'm inhumane for loving a place which had took the lives of so many

2. It's jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring structure.. Although work started on it back in AD 72, the artchitects clearly had the foresight to build in contingency plans.. which till to-date can still be considered as somewhat modern... eg, the adjustable roofing, in case of rain, the loos.... etc etc

Anyway, the movie Gladiator, was thoroughtly researched and seemed to have reflected the Colosseum as it was back in its days of glory... hence can be watched as reference... :P Cheers to Russell Crowe! heheheh

BUT.... a word of caution oh..

DO NOT BE SHOCKED if you're going to the colosseum via the metro..... This is coz, the huge monument is right smacked outside the metro station... so, there u were, happily getting ur tickets punched, turn around and PWOAH!!!!

Also, lots of muscly half naked dudes walkin about pretending to be gladiators and offering to pose in your photos... clicked away if u must, but be sure to haggle for the fees..... :P.

Oh.. thirdly... I personally don't think it's necessary to join one of those Imperial Tour or something something. Joined one and it bored us tremendously as the "tour" did not cover for entrance fee into the Colosseum, and no time was allowed for those interested, to enter without risking the whole "tour" abandoning them behind.

While queuing for the Colloseo...

by ainhoaflies

While queuing for the Colloseo in Rome, don't be suspicious if you are approached by a young person offering a free guided tour. The guides a re expatriate art students earning their daily bread providing informative and entertaining tours of the Colloseo - a tip is appreciated.

To avoid the long queues for the Vatican Museum, go on Wednesday mornings at around 10 - 11 am. The Pope will be holding a public audience so everyone will be outside St Peter's instead.

Having a Capuccino in a beautiful Piazza is a pleasure, but a pleasure that I do not recommend to do too often it can be REALLY EXPENSIVE!!!!!! But...hey there are somethings that have to do done!

Clothes

by Katya111 about All the Clothing

This is one of the outlets in Roma, to tell the truth, it is out of it:)))
This outlet is called "The Castle Romano outlet"
I suppose, that in every hotel, there is an info, regarding it,
but dont pay attention to the advise of people working on the reception desk, not to go there cos of the price is the similar to the centre of Rome.
The prices in the centre of Roma are much higher, really, belive me:)))) then in this outlet
http://castelromano.mcarthurglen.it/index.php?lang=en
It is very easy to go there by a public transport, but...........believe me, it is more convenient to take a special bus , that costs 23Euro, it will take you from the hotel at 12.30 and will waiting for you near this Castel, untill 6pm. ( so if you are planning to buy a lot of things, it is the best way to do this).
The whole info about this bus you may ask on the reseption desk
The alternative is the public transport, it is very easy, but be prepare to spend much time for this:)))
to know how to reach this Castel by the public transport , please, send an e-mail http://castelromano.mcarthurglen.it/index.php?lang=en
and ask them how to reach thier outlet by the public transport:)))) thet will give you the perfect info.
But , dont forget to ask them HOW TO GO BACK ( because we didnt know this and had some problems:)
The prices there are really nice::))))) There you can buy any clothes (for men, women, children) Prices are lower then in Rome ( not taking to account the summer period)

Ristotram

by Fam_Stoica

Trambus has renewed a number of its vintage streetcars into elegant tram restaurants known as Ristotram. These unique trams are the onty ones of their kind in Italy. They can arrange a wonderfully prepared meal for up to 30 people.

Ristotram also can be rented in exclusive use, for surprise parties, corporate venues, weddings, birthdays, christenings and many other forms of entertainment.

Java, sweet java

by kbsunnyside about Bar St. Eustachio

Either coffee bar has good coffee. The staff at the farther one, which is probably more crowded, has more showmanship/personality I always get coffee, there's a caffe grande at the top of the menu. Friends have had the hot chocolate which was really just straight melted chocolate--RICH.
