There's nothing like a cappuccino in the morning. In Italy cappuccino is typically served only in the morning. And stopping at a bar in the afternoon for an espresso. Drinking your coffee at the counter is much, much cheaper.
I've been told that if you simply ask for a caffe you get an espresso. I just asked for espresso. A caffe americano is espresso watered down with hot water. For you coffee lovers its the closest thing you can get to american coffee. An espresso with a touch of steamed milk is a caffe macchiato. Also a favorite of mine.
It's funny. Being in Italy really brings home the culture in America of carrying around that steaming cup of coffee all day long like an accessory. I felt weird without it.
