Suggestions for a birthday in Rome?

by BrenfromEngland

My sister is visting Rome this week with her husband to celebrate her 50th birtday.
I'd like to arrange some kind of a surprise, like pay for a meal at a restaurant or something.
Does anybody have any suggestions please?
I would need to be able to pay over the phone or on the internet.

Thanks

Harry's Bar
Very nice(don't go by the name) and a little on the pricey side. Situated atop of the famed Via Vittorio Veneto (Just up the street from the US Embassy.

Tip: People tend to be very well turned out (well dressed) on this street, especially on weekends.

Enjoy.

Thanks very much for the recommendation.
I made a reservation for my sister and she just called to say it was the best restaurant they have ever been to.
Now I'm just waiting for the bill !!!

Glad they enjoyed it. The exchange rate might minimize the damage somewhat. At close today 1 GBP = 1.13 Euro.

In any event, glad I could help. Happy Birthday to your sister.

Travel Tips for Rome

Rome is an open air museum...

by kestelli

Rome is an open air museum which covers the full city. Thus walking around is a great idea. One nice (yet long) walking tour would be as follows: Start from Colosseum. Go to Emanuel II monument, pass by to Piazza di Venezia. Walk through Via del Corso. When you see a sign to the right saying 'Fontana di Trevi' make a right turn. Visit the Trevi fountain. Continue towards the Piazza di Spagna. Just look at the old buildings surrounding you. During the new year, we walked to Piazza del Popolo (People's place). The roads were packed. When entering the new year, many fireworks were lit. People were spraying champagnes to each other. The excitement was wonderful

Pope was thrown in a well in Trastevere

by icunme

Nope - we really don't think it was an ancient local custom to throw the Pope in a well. But it is a custom to dedicate a Christian monument to our martyers.
Photo left - S. Callisto (pope in 217-222) was killed by being thrown in a well near S. Maria in Trastevere. The Friars of Cassino dedicated to him this little church near their palace.
In the 1920s each historical quarter of Rome was presented with a little fountain.
Photo center - Trastevere because of its many trattorias got this "Fountain of the Wine" which is located in the narrow alley opposite S. Callisto.
Photo right - The "smallest house of Trastevere" is at the end of the same alley.

by a12345 about Centoventi

You can find quality shirts, tailor maded too, and quite low prices. There a lot of ties too and other accessories.
Yuo will meet kindly people who could help you to choose your own shirt or your present for a friend. The shirts and the ties are really fantastic, you can choose a standard or a tailored-made shirt selected from a variety of collars , fabrics and colors. The shirts are manufactured using the finest fabrics from some of Italy's finest textile companies: Monti and Canclini. Every fine details is taken into account from the buttons to the collar sticks.
The ties are so beautiful and you can find colors and models for every day time. You can buy a fantastic shirt with a tie for about one hundred Euro.

Termini Station ~ Rome

by Jenniflower

At Termini train station you can catch mainline intercity trains to everywhere in Italy. Public transport here is really cheap, so you really can't complain much, it's incredibly good value.

Until recently apparently, they had a really strange practice of deciding children's fares on height, not age; children under one metre tall travelled free, but kids over a metre paid the adult fare. However as from the year 2000, all children under the age of ten travel free on the buses and subway trains.
