Rome On Sunday

by Ernie44

We are taking a cruise ship from Florida to Barcelona, we plan to fly to Rome on Saturday the 24th of April. Are the sights in Rome open for visitors on Sunday's

some are - like St Peters is - but we were talking in another thread about how the vatican museum is usually closed on sundays - except on the last sunday of the month when it is free - therefore it is mad

Re: Rome On Sunday

sorry - i am very distracted because i have just found out on the miscellaneous forum that one of our much loved members has just died from a car crash -

what i should say is that you will definitely find plenty to do in rome on a sunday - there is just so much to do and see

but some specific things will be closed to the public

what did you really really want to do and see and i will check for you

Re: Rome On Sunday

by Ina08

You might want to check out via the internet if the sites you are interested are open as the 25th of April is a public holiday in Italy.
Generally all sites are open on Sundays and tend to be closed on Mondays.

Re: Rome On Sunday

by mccalpin

The above statements are all true. Jen is right that the Vatican Museums will be open on April 25 and free (and likely quite crowded...oh, well), and Daniela is right to mention April 25th as a public holiday (Liberation Day, when the Italians rose up at the end of the Nazi occupation during WWII). However, when you check individual sites, I think you'll find most places open. My recollection of the outdoor sites (like the Forum, the Colosseum, the Baths of Caracalla, etc.) is that they tended to close only on Jan 1st and Dec 25th and maybe May 1st.

Don't worry, if you're there for one day, you'll find plenty to do...Monday may actually prove to be more difficult for the reason that Daniela noted...

We did the Palatine, Forum and Colosseum on our Sunday in Rome - no problems at all. I remember stopping ton a few churches (afternoon) along the way as well. You should't have any difficulties finding enough to do!

(Jen - hope you've been back to that aforementioned forum. Curiouser and curiouser...)

Travel Tips for Rome

The artwork of the Vatican is absolutely inspiring

by Nexus7

I took the tour through the basillica and was astounded at the history and artwork. I respected the rule of not taking photographs so you'll just have to see the beauty inside and be astounded yourself. The religious tapestries are the most awe inspiring and scary looking things I've seen. The catacombs where the former Popes lie is incredible.

ITALY THROWS A PARTY - World Cup Revelry

by icunme

The second night's celebration of Italy's victory culminated with over 1 million people in Circus Maximus tonight - a sea of waving flags greeted Italy's soccer team as the entered in an open bus winding through the streets of Rome, hours late due to huge crowds along the way. Many other piazzas were filled with people celebrating.
Once they reached the Circus Maximus, the players appeared on stage, dancing and waving, as the crowd stretched out before them waving Italian flags. Alessandro Del Piero, who scored a goal in the semi-final win over Germany, took off his shirt and threw it into the crowd, posing bare-chested in front of the masses.

TV coverage has been constant and the party continues on into the night.

Cheap Clothes.!

by siso010 about Men's Clothing

to buy cheap clothes in Italy I think you should go to Via Sannio street, there you will find everything women and men clothing army also. buy everything but be aware of the price you should lower it as much as you can. almost try to lower the price about 30-40% of the price the seller said, and be sure that you will take it otherwise leave the seller you will find him calling you to come back and take the stuff with the price you said.

trams

by tompt

Public transport in Rome is quit good. There are two subway lines, many busses and even trams.
If you want to know more about public transport in Rome look at the website of the transportcompany ATAC. They have much info, also in english.

Worst restaurant we visited

by Turska about Enoteca Bevitoria

We thought that we should at least once eat at Piazza Navona. We were again quite hungry,so we didn´t change our mind even after we saw the prices here.Maybe we should have left..We choosed this place, because they had little different pizzas(seems like in Rome all restaurants have same pizza-menus),and we felt like a pizza.
At menu, there was pizzas with proscutto crudo and some other with proscutto cotto. In my pizza there should have been proscutto cotto, but it was crudo(I´m sorry, but we hate it,it´s like chewing gum with ham-flavour-I know we are fool..),and i had to take the meat of after trying to eat it.My husband took salami-pizza,but he had raw bottom,it was not cooked ready, and he couln´t eat it.Waither wasn´t so nice, and food was overpriced, and our water came with icecubes-(only place it happened-and I´m not so good with my stomach, and afraid of "dirty water").I will not recommend this. Only good thing was wine.Is there even any poor Italian white-wine? ;) At least we haven´t had any.We noticed that other customers weren´t more pleased than us.
