While walking the HILL to Tempio di Giove.

We stopped to have a rest and I thought that I was hallucinating...(very, very hot and wishing that I wasn't there)...We had a debate about this supposed township ......... I remember saying it looks really quiet, before I finally realised that it was Terracina Cemetery.
Terracina (1)

"Roman Terracina"
Terracina was originally founded on a hill, and it was here that the Temple of Jupiter Anxur was constructed in the year 1BC.
A road leads up to Monte San Angelo, where the impressive ruins of the imposing edifice can still be seen.
On a clear day, from here there are panoramic views of Terracina, the plains, the coastline, the mountainous headland of San Felice Circeo.

As Terracina was positioned on the ancient Appian Way in Roman times it was an important port and staging post on this major thoroughfare.
To improve the route, which originally was forced to head inland and had to traverse several hills, the Roman Emperor Trajan ordered that the cliff be cut away to a depth of 36 meters, at the foot of the Pisco Montano promontory, to form a coast road.
The current coast road still follows this route today.

"Centro Storico"
In the Centro Storico is the Piazza del Municipio, which has the original paving of the ancient Roman Forum.
Here is the 11th-century Cathedral of SS. Pietro e Cesareo, which was built on the site of, and incorporated into, the ruins of the Temple of Rome and Augustus. It has a tall decorative brick bell tower.

Nearby there is a Roman archway and an original tract of the ancient Via Appia.

Other architectural sites include the 13th century churches of San Domenico and San Francesco, the 18th century Chiesa del Purgatorio, the 12th century Frangipane Castle or Rocca Traversa.
The newer part of the town sprawls out onto the plain, and has a lively and fashionable shopping centre with many bars and restaurants.
Along the seafront, of Terracina’s 15 kilometres of golden, sandy beach, runs a long tree lined promenade.
Interestingly, Terracina is twinned with Exeter in England.
