by diocletianvs I stayed in this b&b in the center of Genova, close to via Balbi and Stazione Principe. My train was late and Michela, lady that runs the place, was worried sending me SMS messages asking whether I need help finding the place... I had a single room for 40 Eur per night (which was a little bit more expensive since I reserved through the agency). The room was OK, and the shared bathroom was flawlessly clean, as everything else.
I guess the unique quality of this place is Michela - she'll greet you on arrival and make sure that you have freshly baked focaccia for breakfast in the morning. And of course, her dog, that will also happily greet you every time he sees you return. I'm sure I'll stay here next time I return to Genova, and I recommend it to everyone. *update* : I was warned that the website of this property is down for some time so I don't know if Michela runs this b&b any more. If it can be of any help - I reserved my room through www.venere.com - maybe it is still listed there? by Carletto76 If you want to rest in the quiet ad beautiful suburb of Nervi, the Hotel Esperia is surely a good choice! Some friends of mine went there and appreciated it a lot, so I think I can suggest it! ;-) The prices are really good, considering that Nervi is usually one of the most expensive zones of Genova. The hotel is really few steps away from Nervi railway station, the wonderful park and the sea! It is a very quiet zone to rest, but also a good place to go around the Riviera, and the trains connect it to Genova's centre in less than 20 mins. A double room costs about 110 euros per room. If you come by car, take the Genova Nervi exit of the motorway and then follow the signs for the railway station.Website: http://www.hotelesperia.it/

by Carletto76 The hostel in Genoa is very far from the centre, up on the hill above the town. It will take you about 30/40 mins from the 2 railway stations to get there with the bus. Don't even try to go there on foot, unless you are Reinhold Messner! ;-) It's an official hostel, so you need the IYHF card in order to sleep there. The hostel staff speak English but, IMHO, is not so friendly, there is a curfew at 1am, and you MUST leave the room at 9am also if you stay there for more nights. You can go back to the room after 3.30pm. There are lockers outside the rooms, but you have to use your own lock, or buy one. My opinion: go there only on really budget travel, otherwise avoid it, the cons are more than the pros.
213 beds 8 beds per room (male and female not together, we are puritans!) with showers and toilets on the same floor 4 beds per room with bathroom facilities for families and group leaders. Bar with cold and hot dishes. Great view of the town. No physical barriers. A lovely place to stay on the top of the hill in Genoa with a beautiful view of the harbour and light house too!!! Most friendly and helpful staff made it feel more like home rather than a hostel!!! Great atmosphere and location!!! Would love to come back just to stay there!!! It gets full pretty fast, so do make reservations well in advance to avoid disappointments later!!! The alley to Casa Veranda at night by sim1 I have stayed two nights at Casa Veranda in Genoa, hahaha, and I still can't decide if I can recommend this place to you or not. It has some clear disadvantages, but also advantages. Hahaha, the problem is I don't know how to start describing this B&B, but I'll give it a try :-) The first disadvantage is quite clear to see in the picture.... stairs!! And stairs... and more stairs! If you are carrying a lot of luggage I wouldn't advice you to go here. There is a little alleyway up to the entrance of the B&B, but the problem is that the house is very hard to find. There is a little gate on the left side in the alley, you have to go in there and there you will find the entrance to the 'flat'. But most likely you won't notice that the first time, and before you know it you will have gone up ALL the stairs in the little alley instead of only the first few meters until the gate (yeah, yeah, I did that, arghhh!) I passed the B&B climbing about a 100 stairs too many, and I had to go back down again all the way :-( When you get to the flat, you will find your next challenge. There are several doorbells, hahaha, and the worst part is to decide which is the right one to choose. When you enter the 'flat' you have to drag up your luggage 4 stories high, and there is no elevator! Phew, it is a long way up! Inside the flat there are two more stairs to climb, but the good news is when you are in the B&B you do have a nice view over Genova :-) See the next tip for more info about this B&B Theme: Bed and BreakfastPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterAddress: San Bartolomeo del Carmine 4 / 5

Endless stairs to reach Casa Veranda! by sim1 The B&B certainly has some character though, it's not like you are visiting a 'boring' place. In the picture you can see the hallway with the 'endless' stairs leading up to the B&B. The ceilings are painted and the paintings seem to be old and half gone. But it does give a certain charm to the place. To describe the B&B is impossible, hahaha, as I don't know how to put it into words. Although this place is a bit 'different' I have to say that the landlady Elena is wonderful. And that is one of the clear advantages of this place. When you enter the B&B the smell of incense (scented candles) will enter into your nose accompanied by the hearty welcome of Elena. She speaks good English and has been very friendly and helpful. We had to leave for the airport very early in the morning, and I felt a bit bothered about that as that meant having breakfast at 6:30. But Elena didn't mind at all, 'No Problem!' she said, breakfast will be ready for you at 6:30. Hahaha, it is served in an unusual place though! The 'games' room is transferred into the breakfast room in the morning, making the ping-pong table into a huge breakfast table. No complaints about the contents of the breakfast though. There is plenty to choose from, tea or coffee, orange juice, warm little breads (plenty of it and all different types), fresh fruit, several sorts of jam and I think also breakfast cereal. Hahaha, not sure as I haven't tried that. During your breakfast don't be surprised to hear the piano all of a sudden as the landlady seems to enjoy playing the piano. A double room costs about 60 Euro per night, breakfast included. Credit cards are not accepted though, so make sure to bring enough cash. Parking in this area is close to impossible, so keep that into account when you decide to stay here. NB : be aware that there are several hotels / B&B called 'Casa Veranda' In Genoa, hahaha, which can be very confusing! Theme: Bed and BreakfastPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterAddress: San Bartolomeo del Carmine 4 / 5Directions: Close to the piazza della Nunziata, the house is between the Carmine church and a local market.

I had noticed that this hotel was recommended by titti and as it seemed to be good value for money, we booked it through Venere. We loved it - it is one of the most unusual hotels we have stayed in.
