Sea, hills and history
by Carletto76
There are so many things to see in Genova that, after 27 years lived here, I discover new interesting places almost every week! So it's hard to decide what to see and what not for your first trip to Genova!
My suggestion is to concentrate on the old town, walking along the "caruggi". Forget about shopping, going to the beach... you can do those things in many other places, but you won't see such a great historic centre anywhere else! And then of course there's the aquarium, but if you don't like fishes so much there are many other things to see first (at least IMHO!)! Fortunately I never stay away from my hometown for more than a couple of week a year... but if I had to leave it it would be hard, I have to admit it! Genova is unique, it's a shrine full for treasures to discover, I'd miss the sea, the hills, the old rich palazzi, the sound of genoese dialect, the local people always complaining about everything and so on... Genova has its pros and cons, like every place in the World, but it's my hometown, and Iove it!
Inside the cathedral of San Lorenzo

The inside of the cathedral is very impressive. I visited a few more Cathedrals during this trip, but this cathedral impressed me the most. The interior is richly decorated and it is so huge. I went quiet for a while, just admiring everything I saw around me.
The construction of this cathedral started around 1100. Striking in the interior are the black and white stripped arches inside the church.

The closer to the harbour the cheaper - as you move in towards land the shops are bigger and more expensive. the little streets along the harbour are perfect for your souviner needs - ceramics, some silver, etc., Most of our gifts to bring home from our two week trip (visiting six cities) were bought in Genoa!!!!!!!

DO NOT drive your car inside town
by globetrott
Driving your private car in Genua is NOT at all recommendable.
The public transportations (trains, buses, cable cars etc.) are rather good and cheap and driving with your own car is simply dangerous and a lot of stress.
Italians are GOOD and SAFE drivers, but they have another style of driving :
They will not care a lot for trafic lights, they will mostly not stop at a zebra-crossing, when you wait to cross the street...
BUT mostly they will stop when necessary in the VERY LAST second...
When driving in Genua - try to do it in one of the lovely Fiat 500 - they fit into almost every spot and may even park in a garden
