I booked a double room for me and my mom at this hotel in March 2010. We chose it because of its location in the downtown, for the cheap price (a total of 210 euro for three nights in a double room) and for the good reviews we had read on Booking.com.
At the end of our stay there, I have mixed feelings about this hotel.
We were originally given a room on the street, which we found neat and well equipped. However, we spent a sleepless night due to the endless noise that came from via Balbi. Consider that our room was on the first floor and, in spite of the good quality of the window, we felt as if there were no window at all.
The following day, we told the receptionist about this problem and she was very concerned. We asked if we could have another room and she said she would try to. When we come back after our touristic walk, we found out with great pleasure that they had changed our room!
This one was on the second floor (not good if your legs hurt as ours did after walking all day long and there is no lift in the hotel!) but it was considerably quieter, even if a continuous noise of water came from inside the radiator.
Unique Quality: As most hotels in the heart of Genoa (especially in the narrow Balbi, Garibaldi, Cairoli streets), Hotel Nuovo Nord was built inside an old building, so it looks like a house from outside rather than like a hotel.
The pros of this hotel are:
1) its location close to the Piazza Principe railway station and to the main cultural attractions in Genoa (especially to the UNESCO streets Garibaldi, Cairoli and others, and the Musei di Strada Nuova in via Garibaldi);
2) its cheap fares;
3) last, but absolutely not least, its staff. A team of pretty and kind young ladies alternates at the reception. They were always ready to help and suggest us, and willing to have some small talk when we either left the hotel or came back.
