Rough yet refined
by oisha
We passed through Genoa on our driving holiday through Italy. We spent only a few hours there, but it left an impression on the whole party. My father-in-law remembers have his wallet nicked in the first 5 minutes, but I remember the feel of the place.
It's a tough port town crammed full of monumental architecture from the days when Genoa was a great maritime power and a flourishing trade centre. The shabby wharf area is juxtaposed against the stately commercial district. Just wandering the streets of the city centre is very rewarding. Do keep your valuables under close surveillance though.
Meeting New VT-friends
by sim1
Paolo (Utttz), Jane (Oneonta_ni) and her husband just finished their dinner in a little restaurant when we arrived in the city centre. It depends on how you look on it…. We were just too late…. Or just on time…???
The bad part was that we were just too late to have dinner with them, or at least try some of the great desserts. Yummie, all the food looked so delicious! The restaurant even sounded so good, that we decided we should go to the same restaurant on our last evening in Genoa (and I didn’t regret that!).
The good part was that we arrived just on time so we could go to a little bar and have a drink together. I didn’t know Jane (Oneonta_ni) from VT yet, but it was great to meet some new friends! We chatted a lot, had some good laughs, a few drinks.... but no snacks, hahaha because those were for Chiara! Around 2 o’clock (I think, can’t really remember the time, lol) it was time to head back to the hotel. It was a great coincidence to meet Jane, as it was their last evening in Italy and for us the trip just began. I couldn’t wish for a better start of the vacation than this way, with meeting 'old' and 'new' VT friends :-)
on deck of the pirate-ship
by globetrott
You may walk freely over the decks and feel like an old sailor...
...but you may easily realize, this is just an artificial ship that has not a lot of the features you might need, when sailing on the open sea !
--------------------------------------------------------------------- The pirate-ship is also a nice place for a view on the port and the old houses built on the port.
A few years ago this " highway on feet " was simply put in front of their houses and it is one of the most frequented streets in Genua today.
See the sunset in the hills of campomorone
by ciao_bambino
Its easy to find just following the signs from Genoa, its about a 30 min drive but well worth it once you get to the top, its so peaceful and the hills just surround you. Bring a jacket tho because although it was incrediably warm down in Genoa your going up into the hills and it soon changes in temp. We just drove up to the hills, parked the car and walk up a hill and sat that for sunset.
Going to the Opera
by Carletto76 about Teatro Carlo Felice
It is Genova most important and biggest theatre, sited in Piazza de Ferrari. It was first built at the beginning of the 19th century, but it was hardly bombed during WWII and remained in ruined conditions until 1987.
Now it has regained the old aspect on the outside, while inside it's a modern theatre, very particular with its "ligurian-style" house facades painted walls with small terraces where people can sit and watch the shows. Terrific acoustics for every kind of classic and sometimes also pop/rock music. If you go to the Opera you have to dress in a very elegant way, like in every opera theatre in the World!
