The architecture
by micas_pt
Something I enjoyed while strolling through La Spezia was the architecture, both in the city as well as in a residential neighborhood that we passed while going up the way to the castle.
In the case of city’s streets near the sea, the buildings are big and imposing, most of them with carved details. In the villages where I had been previously something I found curious is that buildings are not carved but painted and some of them even look like real carvings made in stone!!
The residential neighborhood near the castle has some beautiful villas, from which you enjoy a most pleasant view over La Spezia “downtown” and the sea.
Portovenere. You may notice...

Portovenere. You may notice how close together the houses are and how narrow the streets are in Portovenere. This town was built to withstand harsh pirate attacks. The houses are close together to form a wall along the shore and the streets are narrow so they could be quickly bolted shut.If there was a serious threat of attack, the cliffs would be smeared with tallow, so the enemy , would slip and then the women would poor boiling oil over the pirate's heads! OUCH!
Portovenere - church

.
Climb up to this church on the picture in Portovenere, try to enter to it's tower to admire the view. When I was there in 1994 the tower was closed to public and there was nobody in the church to ask :-(.

"the Gulf of the Poets"
The Gulf of La Spezia is an almost perfect amphiteatre; the bay is also known as the Gulf of Poets and even in our day continues to attract and inspire people who come here to admire its amazing beauty.
"Porto Venere"
This striking, sea-faring village is unique of its kind in Liguria. This location is guarded by three small, beautiful islands named Palmaria, Tino e Tinetto. Over the village the Churches of San Pietro and San Lorenzo dominates the area.
"Cinque Terre"
The five hamlets of the Cinque Terre are located on the west coast of the Riviera. Five villages feature this land, giving it the famous name. This is a beautiful and unforgettable location you can't miss when you visit this part of Liguria region.
