We stayed in Hotel Palace for four nights in October 2011. Levanto is an old, small but very nice town. It has a good atmosphere: a lots of restaurants and bars, stores, long sand beach, lots of trees and flowers, and very good connections (train, boot, car) to Cinque Terre.
The hotel stuff is very polite and the hotel itself very old but ok. The rooms are quite large, some of them have a balcony. The bathroom is very very small and the shower head is fixed to high, so that the small people have a problem. On the other hand, the hotel has a really nice location in the downtown and everything ist reachable - train station, supermarket, bars and beach.
We had great time in this hotel.
Unique Quality: The cuisine is full of nice surprices. The hotel has the best domestic red vine that we ever tasted. We just booked halfboard and this was a very good decision.

I and a friend will be staying in Levanto between 28 and 31 Dec. Our aim is to relax.
Can anyone suggest things to do / an itinerary or guide me in the write direction to research things to do ? We wouldn't mind a guided too either (day trips etc..)
What would the weather likely to be at that time of year ?

Levanto is a lovely, little town, but not exciting. You have to visit the villages in Cinque Terre. They are easy accessible by train. I'm not sure about if it's feasible in December, but the walk from Levanto to Monterosso (2,5 hours) was for us, a great experience.

Your dates might not yet be uploaded, so just choose the same day of the week next week. Times and fares won't change.
You can also use the train to visit other places, as well as the CT villages e.g. Genoa, La Spezia, Lucca, Pisa...even Florence. You don't need to buy tickets in advance online, or book in advance. You can just buy them at the station (ticket machines are easy to use ad have English language options).
As for the weather: take clothes you can layer. sensible footwear and warm, waterproof coat/jacket. It may well rain and will certainly be schilly once the sun sets (if you see the sun).

Levanto is a great town. More often you will see Italian tourists in the town. We have been to Levanto a few times and really enjoyed the town. One of our favorite restaurants is the Ristorante L' Oasis which is just off of the Piazza Cavour. The food is excellent and the staff friendly.

Lévanto has a HUGE marina, one of its fraction you can see on this picture, and behind is the small beach. The main beach with umbrellas and lots of beach bars is on the left side.
Marina was very busy (of course, it was summer :-) and in spite of the gloomy weather and very wild seas everyone seemed to be keen on their boat rides.
There are PLENTY of scuba divers in Lévanto (in Italian they're called simply "sub" :-) but this guys were sooo FUNNY! Have you ever seen scuba divers crawling out of the sea?! I haven't! All the others were walking out normally, but these twop were hilarious!
We stayed in Levanto at the very north of the Cinque terre. and caught the train down and walked back. We also did some hill walks, in our mid sixties and we loved it
We stayed at The Garden hotel which was excellent ,great people who run it they couldn't have been more helpful. And the hotel is central, modern and immaculately clean. breakfast was included We walked there from the train station about a fifteen minute walk
Levanto is called the city slow. This town is relaxing after the loads of people in the other towns here. It is a lovely town.
We were in the train taking us from Pisa to Genova... but it got really late-about 2hours at least. We spent at least 15 or 20 minutes in each stations... Soooooo, we decided that we would get off at the following station ! That's how we got to this charming sea-side town.
You can't see it on the pictures (it's not my favorite topic to take) but the camping was nice although it was not so animated as the one we went to in Firenze...
In the town, we got pizzas to go and had them on the beach ! pretty nice, although evenings already got cold...
