I have been sending emails to the Hotel Palme in Monterosso al Mare info@hotelpalme.org & info@hotelpalme.it for some weeks now to confirm a booking but I have not had a reply. I have also telephoned from Australia and received a recorded message in Italian (which unfortunately I cannot understand) Can anyone help and let me know if their is a problem with Hotel Palme. Regards Lance

I struck the same sort of problem 2 years ago - most of the towns along the CQ almost close down for winter. An amazing part of the world.

Corra (xaver) points out a good fact - that smaller institutions in Italy are often still more comfortable with fax than email. We here on VT saw a similar situation with a hotel in Venice a couple of years ago, where emails were not getting returned...it turns out that only one person at the hotel knew how to read emails, and she was on vacation ;-)

Send the fax...this is the way that the travel industry in Italy has done stuff for decades, so they're familiar with it...and you at least know if a fax machine on the other end received your message - with email, you can never be sure if your message was ever delivered at all...

Monterosso - hotel to train station

by yakman

Doe anyone know the address of the train station in Monterosso? I am trying to find the distance between Hotel Palme and the train station.
thanks

Re: Monterosso - hotel to train station

by mccalpin

The address of the train station is about Via Fegina, 38. The address of the hotel is Via 4 Novembre, 18. Go to www.viamichelin.com and enter these two addresses as well as Monterosso al Mare and Italy. ALSO, enter the "on foot" option.

The result is a walk of 400 meters. I cannot speak to changes of terrain, and it looks like the first 100-150 meters of Via Fegina is in a tunnel, but I will let people who have been there speak to that...

The hotel website has it's own 'how to reach us' page:

http://www.hotelpalme.it/uk/dovesiamo01.htm

If you click on the words 'how to reach us' then, in the new window, on the 'il treno' little train picture you'll get a whizzy red line which shows your route. You won't need to go through the tunnel.

Travel Tips for Monterosso al Mare

The Cinque Terre Card

by tini58de

The Cinque Terre Card is your entrance card for the hiking path #2 from Monterosso al Mare to Riomaggiore (and/or vice versa). It also includes all trainrides between La Spezia and Levanto for the period of validity, which is either 1, 3 or 7 days.

In 2006 the rates were as follows:

- Eur 5.20 (1 day )
- Eur 12.40 (3 days)
- Eur 19.50 (7 days)

The tickets can be obtained at the entrances of the hiking paths or at the local tourist offices or train stations. You get some very useful information along with it!

The Lemon Festival!

by sue_stone

The Lemon Festival is an annual event held on the Saturday preceding Ascension Sunday, at the end of May.

It is celebrated with a contest for the biggest local lemon. There is also a contest of shop windows decorated with lemons, as well as live music throughout the day.

There was lemon giveaways and tasting of all sorts of lemon products available.

We had a tasty lemon gelato - yum!

Located in the old town area of Monterosso.

From the train station, walk through the tunnel, or up around the headland to get to the old town.

Look for "The Giant"

by nanct45

While walking the promenade in the newer part of Monterosso, Via Fegina..don't forget to look for "The Giant". He represents the God Neptune. At one time, he supported a giant shell on his shoulders and held a trident, but time has taken its toll. You can still see what is left of "The Giant".

walk the small paths through the fertile terraces

by globetrott

Have a walk through the fertile terraces

The terraces have a total length of 800 Km - while the coast of Cinque terre is just about 8 Km.

But on the hills and mountains each spot is used for agriculture.

And Cinque Terre is the ONLY National Park in Italy, where farmers may and even are forced to grow their fruits and restore all broken terraces, otherwise, if the terraces ( beeing not natural at all ) would not be restored from time to time, the whole coastline would be in danger to go down to the sea (like seen at some places )

San Giovanni Battista

by tini58de

In the old part of Monterosso you will find the church of San Giovanni Battista, a remarkable Gothic church which was built in the 13th century. The black and white striped facade and the rosette window are striking from the outside, but the inside is well worth a visit as well! The square tower was origianally a watch tower, which was then integrated into the church and later used as the church tower!
