A la carte train, walk, boat versus Cinque Terre Card

by worldromer

We plan a day from Genoa by train with stops at Monterosso, Veranzza and Manarola, then walk the trail to Riomaggiore and then boat to Monterosso and train from there back to Genoa. Much talk of the Cinque Terre train/boat card but not at all clear about:

1) Do we buy one ticket from Genoa to Monterosso round trip and then also buy a Cinque Terre Card that covers all locally all the above including boat ride?

2) Is there one single Cinque Terre Train/Boat card we use from Genoa?

3) One goal is to avoid having to queue up at local Cinque Terre stations to buy tickets.

Sooo, can we do it all from the Genoa train station?

1. No. Just buy tickets from point to point as you need them. Ticket machines are easy to use, but ticket offices in the villages will almost certainly be open anyway (unless you are travelling in the lowest season at an unusual time). Tickets between villages are very cheap.

If you want to buy a CT card (like most such cards, this only worthwhile imo if you intend use it to the max and a) take the boat ride and/or b) walk the coastal paths) then just buy your ticket from Genoa to your starting village and then another ticket from whatever village you leave to return to Genoa.

2. Not as far as I know. Genoa is not in the CT national park.

3. I doubt you will have to queue for long, if at all. Cards are available in many places within the CT and at La Spezia station. Don't know if you can get them in Genoa, sorry.

My wife & I have just returned from there last week where we did a one day visit from Portifino. Just buy a return train ticket from Genoa to Manarola, this will cover all your train journeys & you wont have to worry about lining up at individual train stations to get tickets. Don't forget to validate your tickets at the little yellow validating machine on the train platform before you hop on the train or you will could get fined!!! I would not stop at Monterosso on the train as you can see it when you arrive back from Riomaggiore on the ferry. Be aware that the ferry does not run if the weather is bad due to rough seas. You also need to buy tickets to enter the National Park, you can do this at the ticket office as you get off the train at Manarola. Then just buy a one way ticket for the ferry ride Riomaggiore to Monterosso. Buying the Cinque Terre card allows you to do mutliple trips between villages which I don't think you need from what you have mentioned & it will be a very full day just doing what you are planning. Hope you have a wonderful trip, we did.

You could buy a ticket from Genoa but I am not sure of the 'legality' of breaking your journey en route.

Up to you if you want to do it. Being a cautious soul, I'd rather wait a couple of minutes in a queue to buy each ticket as I went along rather than risk the hassle and potential cost if it's not allowable.

A return is no cheaper than two one-way tickets, by the way.

If you do decide to do this, then it would make sense imo to buy the ticket from Genoa to Riomaggiore, the last of the 5 villages and the nearest to La Spezia.

Travel Tips for Monterosso al Mare

A village devided...

by tini58de

... by a tunnel. The train station is in Fegina, the new part of Monterosso and so is the bigger part of the beach. In order to get to the older part you have to walk (or drive) through the tunnel. The pier is in the old part of town and that is also where the more Cinque Terre type village is including many churches, narrow streets, restaurants and shops!

don't skip Vernazza !!

by globetrott

Do not skip Vernazza and the other villages of Cinque terre, just as Monterosso al Mare is so easy to reach!

Vernazza is in my opinion a much more beautiful and cosy place.
Click on the pic - in order to see the whole pic, that was partly cut by VT for the thoumb.

For more infos and pics - please have a look on my Vernazza-page !

Sarong

by kcochran111

A sarong is a lightweight, fast-drying article of clothing that can be used in a variety of ways. Lay on it at the beach, then use it to dry off after a swim or to cover up that new sunburn.

Bring one with you, as they sell for minimum 10 Euro in Monterosso.

Oratorio Santa Croce - interior

by globetrott

Have a look for this lovely church interior in Baroque style.

When you click on my picture you may see a typical cross for the area of Liguria on the right.
The church is open during the day and waiting for your visit - free of charge, and on a really hot summerday it might be also a great place to escape the heat.

Giuseppe Garibaldi on the main square

by globetrott

Giuseppe Garibaldi has chosen a shady place on the main square ...

...and he looks more like a noble gentleman beeing on vacation in Monterosso al Mare...

...than a leader of the italian revolution...

;-))
