Car rental in Monterosso

by Sundreamer_3000

Bonjour!
I am planning a trip in Cinque Terre in September. I will be arriving by Pise then taking the train to Riomaggiore. Then, will hike in Cinque Terre until Monterosso. Once in Monterosso, I would like to rent a car to cross over to Venise in order to catch a ferry to Croatie. I can't seem to find a car rental place in Monterosso that would allow me to drop it off in Venise. Any suggestion? Should I reverse my trip to arrive by Genoa then start in Monterosso down to Riomaggiore? Thanks in advance for your kind advice.
Friendly,
Sun

Hi Sun,
Monterosso is very small so I think there aren't any car rentals there.

Anyway take a look on
http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html
and consider to travel by TRAIN from Monterosso to Venice. I think it's more convenient than hiring a car (in terms of money, safety and comfort).

If you wish to go to Venice only by car let me know, I should try to help you!

Welcome in my Country!
Fabrizio

I dont think its a good idea to rent a car in that area just in order to go to Venezia ! By train its so easy and also a lot less expensive, because you have to calculate a oneway-rental that is extremely expensive in Europe.
Also: driving in Italy is hard when you are not used to some "local customs" and on the highway you have to pay toll.
Monterosso certainly does not have car rentals and IF they have it they rent it for local aeras only, not to be left back in Venezia !

No point at all in hiring a car, as the others have said. The nearest car hire is likely to be La Spezia anyway.

One-way rental will indeed carry a hefty premium anywhere and parking in Venice is extremely expensive (and difficult).

So just get the train. It's safe, comfortable and very easy (ticket machines have English language options). No need to buy tickets in advance online.

http://trenitalia.it/homepage_en.html

will give you train times, details and fares in English (it's a variant of the page given above). Journey time is from just over 5 hours, with one-way fares from 51.20 euro.

If you do decide to drive, look at www.viamichelin.com for routes and estimated drive-times.

Monterosso to Venice will take at least 4.5 hours, quite possibly longer depending on traffic and your navigation skills.

So the train is not a great deal slower anyway!

Travel Tips for Monterosso al Mare

Cinque Terre Pass

by wilocrek

If your planning to be in Cinque Terre for at least 3 days I would recommend buying the 3 day Cinque Terre Pass that includes access to all the trails and also unlimited use of the commuter train that runs between all five villages. In Feb. 2008 I paid roughly 20 euro for my pass, it was well worth it. You can buy the pass at any of the train stations, the pass also comes with a map and train schedule.

Great wildlife in these waters

by globetrott

There are lots of different species of fish and whales living in that area and on this sign, that I saw close to the castle-rock you may have a look for them.

at special times of the year there will be cruises going directely for whale-watching

Shoes and Camera a must!

by sue_stone

Don't forget to pack some shoes suitable for walking/hiking along the cliffs between the towns on the Cinque Terre.

When we were walking, we saw one lady in high heels about to set off.....we advised her to turn back! A camera is a must. The coastline is spectacular. Digital is best - that way there is no limit to the number of photos you take!!

Oratorio Santa Croce

by globetrott

In the centre of the village you will see this small oratory of the 17th century.

From outside it does not look special, But have a look inside, it is really worth a visit, as you may see on my next picture !

Take the ship from Portovenere

by globetrott

Take the ship from Portovenere - you normally will have 3 hours to explore the village of Monterosso al Mare.

The ship will dock at the old part of town, just opposite the church and under the castle-rock.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the view looking back towards Vernazza - which is found in the next bay, after a sailing-time of about 10 minutes.

And you may also see the terraces, where the path from Vernazza will go across and will finally come down in the small path seen at the end of the Monterosso-bay
