hey everyone
i am curious to know where i can find a hotel to stay close to Portofino yet not have to pay a lot of money for the hotel? All i can find within portofino are quite pricy and the ones outside confuse me since i am not familiar with the surrounding, any suggestion is welcome!

santa margherita ligure is just a few km away by bus or car, the next town really, has hotels in pretty much all price ranges, certainly a lot cheaper than portofino. the next town over is rapallo.
Portofino is a rather expensive area. If you are flexible in your choice of destination, consider Lago del Garda, which is the largest lake in Italy. In the mountains near the lake you can get a nice hotel room for just 30 euros per night. See HotelMartinelli, for example. Great food, magnificent views and fresh mountain air.

I think Santa Margherita Ligure is the best choice. Portofino is a VIP tourist place so prices are higher than Santa Margherita Ligure.
If you need very updated info about Santa Margherita Ligure accommodation you could write an e-mail to "mrif" VT member; I helped him in a previous forum and I know he is going to have seven days stay in Santa Margherita Ligure; maybe he could suggest some interesting accommodations...

I have checked: it's not "mfir" but "mrlf".

Portofino is tugged away between Genova and the Cinque Terre at the Ligurian Coast.
The highway A 12 runs along the coast from Genova, passed Recco, Rapallo towards Chiavari. An exit is clearly marked to Portofino.
One can also reach Portofino by boat from Camogli or S. Margherita.
Or as many today will do - they arrive by cruise ship and tender right into the heart of Portofino.

What a lovely place - especially out of season !
This cat was searching for tourists and obviously was interested to be in my pics, as I saw it down in the port and then again, half an hour later ,up the hill in front of church of San Giorgio .
Portofino was already a village in the times of the roman empire, as it was a great strategic place and a great and safe port - hidden for enemies and easy to watch out for dangerous ships approaching.
