The castle and the walls by micas_pt
Portovenere, as well as so many other coastal villages that need to defend themselves, is protected by a castle and its walls. The castle, as usual, is built on a high plane of the village and the walls defend its people from invaders and attacks.
The castle was built in 1160 and it is of Genoese origin; it was later rebuilt in 1458 when some new areas were added. The walls also date from the same period as the castle; they show Portovenere?s original symbol ? 3 towers on a cliff. C*
