Travel Tips for Portovenere

wow rough waves

by MATIM

It is beautiful to look down from the hill to the huge waves of the sea.
When we where there a man was swimming in the rough waves and we where very much afraid something happened to him, fortunately the coastguard came to worn him to go out of the water

On the hill

by matcrazy1

.
Portovenere is located on the hill by a picturesque harbor.

Situated at the far west end of the "Gulf of Poets" has got probabily a Roman origin, as "Portus Veneris" was already mentioned in the 161 BC.
.

Peninsula

by matcrazy1

.
Walk to the end of the peninsula. The village's real symbol is the unique church S. Pietro, which is directly built on a rock (cliffs).

On the other (northern) side of the peninsula you can see amazing, beautiful, fantastic views of Cinque Terre coastline - look at my off the beaten paths tips.
.

Ancient city walls

by matcrazy1

.
Look at the ancient city walls and the tower (Torre Capitolare). Its walls are faced with ashlar- work, each dressed stone is slightly blunted. Openings to the first few floors are enriched by mullioned windows and windows with tree lights.

ascensore nooo! grazie

by pollon

Ligurian towns, in particular small and typical ones like this, are famous for their "up and down"s but would you prefer a more comfortable lift or more tiring climbing up and down in a lovely landscape among small streets...? and citizens seem to prefer the 2nd possibility: the town is full of banners saying: "lift nooo! thanks" and "hands off the historic centre!"...
