We enjoyed our two night stay here. This is the only hotel in S. Margherita Liguere that a bus can use so we were told that is why we stayed here. Our small room had a balcony that joined with other balconies. We could see the water from our balcony which was very nice. The room has been updated but still retains an older decor. The flat screen TV was mounted on the wall leaving an empty shelf for storage which was good. The cupboards for storage are right beside the bed.
We enjoyed using the beach - after leaving the hotel we walked under the road and through a restaurant area to the stony beach. Towels are provided in the underground entry way. There is no charge for towels or to leave things on the beach. The lounge chairs do cost money but there was not one person using the chairs the entire time we were there. There is a full time life guard on duty watching swimmers. We took our water shoes and were able to walk on the small beach and out on the dock where we took the stairs into the water which was crystal clear. From there we swam to a floating dock. The water temperature was comfortable - this was September 5th. This was fun!
One of the elevators was really old fashioned. The lobby relaxation rooms have nice furniture and there are lots of photos of Regina Elena and her family, including her family tree. The room keys are the huge old fashioned kind - they are best left in the lobby when going out. The hallway floor outside our room was black and white tiles and had period furniture, chairs, etc. There is an outdoor pool here on top of the hotel. At the pool you can get a very nice view of the area. The water in the pool was very cold - way too cold for swimming so we didn't spend much time there.
This hotel is in an excellent location - you can walk to Portofino from here! Or you can spend five minutes and walk into town where there are many wonderful places to eat. The walk into town goes by the cove where there are many boats and lovely eating places.
The room and bathroom were very clean - there was no counter top in the small bathroom, just a pedestal sink and of course no washcloths. It was also amazing to us that we never had a room with a coffee maker, this one included. We were able to charge all our appliances with the outlets by the mirror. We were given two flat pillows on the beds - there were additional blankets in the closet cupboards. The floors were short wooden boards and were placed on the angle. There was only shampoo here, no conditioner or hand lotion.
Buffet Breakfast was included with our stay. They brought the coffee to our tables so we had to wait but I asked them to bring me a large (grande) pot and they did!! We had the entire morning to ourselves so we weren't in any hurry. The buffet included juices, granola, yogurt, croissants, cheese, cold cuts, jam, butter, milk and tea and assorted fresh fruits. They also gave me a tray of coffee and milk to take up to my room to enjoy on the balcony.
Unique Quality: Probably the pool on the roof is considered unique but unfortunately we didn't use it because it is small and very cold. Even the hot tub was cold. The view from this hotel and from many of the rooms is beautiful.
We got a great deal on Expedia and that's probably the only reason I didn't check out early and go to another hotel. I advise not staying here unless you don't mind hard beds and minimal accomodations. Santa Margherita Ligure is a beautiful town and it is worth it to spend the money on relaxing stay in a beautiful hotel. Breakfast was okay. Lunch and Dinner menu items are overpriced. Better food at similar if not less expensive prices exists in town. The hotel is at the end of the the main portion of SS227 that runs through Santa Margherita Ligure. We asked for assistance in getting a massage. They said they would have to get back to us and never did. Both the hotel website and Expedia's hotel info stated there is free wi-fi in the rooms. This is false. You can only use wi-fi on the ground floor and it is 5,00EUR per 30 minutes or 5,00EUR per 50 minutes to use their one computer. We are students so this was a very important amenity that we couldn't use for 5 days of our stay. This is not a 4-star hotel. We did love the 1940s style of the posters and furniture that still existed in our corner room. We had a gorgeous view of the sea from our balcony, and the hotel is pet-friendly so our 2 small pups could join us on our vacation. Other than those reasons, the money spent was simply not worth it.
Unique Quality: Sea view from balconies.
Private beach is closed in the winter.
Rooftop pool and sunroom are closed in winter.
Directions: End of town on SS227
hotel Regina Elena is the sister hotel to Hotel Laurin which is situated a few doors down. The Elena is more the elite of the two as it has its own private swimming beach and a wonderful outdoor cafe, restaurant and private lockers. Hotel Laurin guests are welcomed to use the beach but you do have to pay a fee for use of the deck chairs and umbrella's.
For location to the main plaza, Hotel Laurin is better situated, however its about a 10 minutes walk from Hotel Elena.
The hotel has fabulous views of the sea and offers everything you would need for a summer holiday. The hotel opened in 1905 with the traditional Ciana family still operating the hotel under the Best Western name.
Unique Quality: The hotel has its own private beach with deck chairs and umbrellas. This beach would be the best in town and outside visitors are not allowed to enter, its for private use to guests from the hotel and guests from Hotel Laurin.
This hotel is a dump. The pictures on websites are misleading. I paid 204 euros a night for the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. The room was tiny, bed hard, and pillows flat. Airconditioner blew hot air and made it impossible to sleep at night. The balcony which I paid extra for had no privacy from the room next door. The pool could have been awesome except for the numerous and poorly supervised kids that disturbed every adult they saw.
