Bellagio's icon.

This hotel is Bellagio's icon and it sits proudly on the waterfront of Lake Como. The hotel is absolutely beautiful in an traditional Italian way, oozing with charm and character this hotel has had some incredible famous guests. In the hall way leading to the restaurant a display of who's who have stayed decorates the walls. Former guests includes Winston Churchill, Roosevelt, the Rothschild’s, J.F. Kennedy; Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Maria Schell, Clark Gable, Robert Mitchum, Al Pacino etc.etc.... and of course a couple from Australia !!

If you can afford this luxury hotel then why not spoil yourself with stunning rooms and beautiful gorgeous sumptuous position overlooking the divine Lake Como.

If you cannot afford to stay here then at least treat yourself to dinner or lunch at one of the restaurants in Hotel Serbelloni.

Unique Quality: The waterfront position.

A Star on Lago di Como

Widely considered the most famous and fabulous hotel on Lago di Como, the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni began its life in the mid-nineteen century as a holiday villa for a wealthy Milanese family. The family sold the villa in 1872 and the following year the villa began its new life as the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni (not to be confused with the "Villa Serbelloni" owned by the Rockefeller Foundation). The same family has owned the hotel for over a hundred years and now the 5th generation of the family headed by Gianfranco Bucher is the owner and manager of the hotel.

The hotel occupies a wide expanse of the peninsula overlooking Lago di Como enjoying one of the most perfect locations in Bellagio. There are gardens, pools, a lakeside terrace, several dining rooms/restaurants, a spa and so much more to explore.

I did not stay at this hotel and can only give you my impression of the rooms but it seems that the standard double rooms while expensive are not what you might expect. Only when you reach the Executive Double Rms. or Senior Suites does the room match what you might expect from this grand hotel. However considering its magnificent location and the high price of hotels in Italy in general, it's probably a good value. (Check for current prices.)

Standard Doubles - 4/29 - 9/23/06 ~ 250 Euros per night; Fall ~ 215 Euros
Deluxe Doubles ~ with living room~ 535 Euros per night summer; Fall ~ 460 Euros
Executive Doubles ~ with living room ~ 730 Euros per night summer; Fall ~ 680 Euros
Senior Suites ~ 935 Euros in summer and 880 Euros ~ Fall
Third or fourth persons are extra; above prices include only taxes & services

Unique Quality: This hotel's public rooms, staircases, dining rooms, lakeside terrace and livings rooms are palatial and are filled with the finest frescoed ceilings, carvings, marble staircases, Murano crystal chandeliers and so much more. The hotel is on a scale with palaces throughout Europe and worth viewing.

However, in my opinion, unless your pockets are very deep and you can afford the finest rooms here, you may be somewhat disappointed with only the standard double rooms and their minor amenities. The furnishings of the standard rooms leave something to be desired unless you are privileged with a view of the lake. The Senior Suites on the other hand are marvelous to behold and probably were occupied by the likes of Winston Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt, kings and dignitaries, and many movie stars during their various stays at this hotel. That being said, just being able to explore this hotel and its lakeside vantage point would be enough for me to stay here if money were no object.

Luxury on Lake Como

Originally constructed in the 1850s for a wealthy Milanese family, this neo-classical villa became a hotel in 1873. Luxuriously decorated throughout with high ceilings, magnificent chandeliers, massive chandeliers and wall and ceiling frescoes. It has played host to a huge number of diverse individuals over the years from the Roosevelts and Winston Churchill to Clark Gable and Al Pacino. The cars in the parking lot are indicative of the tone of this 5 star hotel.

Unique Quality: Positioned on a slight hill overlooking Lake Como, the hotel features painted ceilings in the guest rooms, a magnificent dining room, and overlooking the lake a terrace and a swimming pool. Facing west, it offers views of the far side of the lake at sunset. There is a free carpark, crucial in Bellagio. The hotel is surrounded by well-maintained gardens and now has a fitness center.

More about Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni

I stayed at the Rockefeller's...

by Sheri_Z

I stayed at the Rockefeller's special center and it was so wonderful, 2 buildings are right on the lake, one a historic villa, is up on the hill. But these are not for the general public. If you are a PhD, or an artist, you can apply to Rockefeller to stay here and work in the summer for several weeks -- see their website.

A few of the people I brought here, came a day early or stayed on so I have a short list of hotels.

The first one, the Grand Hotel, i
s a luxury hotel. It's worth a visit
just to see the decor, because Bellagio seems to have been a historic vacation spot, and the hotel retains a lot of its charm and furnishings.
You can have a drink there, just for the atmosphere and then stay at a hotel with
a more reasonable price.

Villa Serbelloni

by Openseas

The Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni is one of the most prestige and famous hotels in Italy. Its located on the beautiful foreshores of Lake Como and has a breathtaking position on the waterfront promontory.

Villa Serbelloni was built as a holiday villa for an aristocratic family from Milan. In 1872 the villa was sold and and the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni opened in 1873. Its interior is decorated with frescoes and elegant paintings reflecting the wealth of its formal years. The building is build in a neoclassical style with beautiful Italians gardens surrounding the whole of the hotel.

If you cannot afford to stay at Hotel Serbelloni, then at least try and have dinner or lunch overlooking the sumptuous gardens and stunning views of Lake Como.

Also take a stroll through the hallway to the reception area and take note of all the famous people who have stayed at Villa Serbelloni. For example Winston Churchill, Roosevelt, the Rothschild’s, J.F. Kennedy; Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Maria Schell, Clark Gable, Robert Mitchum, and Al Pacino.... and many, many more.....have stayed at the Serbelloni.

Eating at a Reasonable Price in Bellagio

by stretchmom

We are traveling to the Lake Como area (staying in Menaggio) and will want to spend some time in Bellagio. There are six of us and I am picking up the tab. (I am a good parent!) Can anyone recommend some great eateries at a reasonable price? Also, if you are familiar with Menaggio and can answer the same question for that wonderful little town, I would greately appreciate it!

I have eaten in Varenna close to Bellagio and have a tip on a great restaurant, Alberco Oliveido - right by the lake.

Bellagio is beautiful, but can be more touristy and crowded. The place where we ate was outstanding. The owner (Laura) takes pride in her business and it shows! We enjoyed wondering thru Varenna too.

We actually got off the boat in Bellagio and it was so crowded in the summer we got right back in the next boat. If we return, it will be off season.

I most certainly can!

Ristorante Bilacus at the top of Via Serbelloni is where I prefer to go for lunch when I'm staying in Varenna. It has wonderfull pergola covered garden with maybe 15 tables in it. Great food, great service and won't break the bank.

I have never been a fan of Menaggio and realy can't recommend Varenna highly enough although I found dining in Hotel Olivedo a bit offputting given the owners eccentricities! Plenty of other dinig establishments to choose from.

Only 6 weeks till I return, have a great trip.

Regards,

Billy
