Need Hotel & Travel Question

by RalphRT

My wife and I will be spending 3 days in Bellagio and arriving from Venice. Is it best to just take the train from Venice to Bellagio (if that is possible)? Or I am best taking the train from Venice to Milan, then train Milan to Varenna? Someone said that if I take the train to Varenna, I can then just take the ferry to Bellagio and it is much faster, cheaper, and easier(???)

Also, does anyone have any good recommendations for staying in Bellagio? Hotel preferred, but open to staying in a B&B (never have been before).

Thanks.

If you can get a train to Varenna, then it's a very short ferry ride to Bellagio. I know there is a train from Milan to Como, where one can get the ferry, but that's a much longer (although very beautiful) ride north to Bellagio. I'm sorry not to know of a hotel - we stayed in Cernobbio, which is to the south and closer to Como. I envy you... what a beautiful part of the world!

www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html will give you train times, details and fares in English.

If your are arriving in Venice itself, then you will leave from Venice Santa Lucia. If you are arriving from Venice Marco Polo airport, it is easier to get the train from Mestre on the mainland (all trains from S Lucia pass through here anyway).

The easiest station to access Bellagio from Milan itself (as opposed to the airports) is Varenna.

http://www.bellagiolakecomo.com/inglese/italiano.html

has details if you click on 'how to reach Bellagio'on the left-hand menu.

http://www.navigazionelaghi.it/ita/com/nlc.html will give you ferry timetables.

Hi,

The fastest (and easiest) way is to go to Milan and then to lake Como. Even if you can "save" kilometers going form Brescia to Varenna you must change trains- wait for the next one and it will be slow regional train.

There is no train line to Bellagio.

You can go to Como city and take from there bus or ferry, but these are less frequent in winter and will take longer (but probably will offer spectacular views)- train form Milano around 40 min and at least 1 hour by ferry. Trains from Milano Centrale (train from Venice will most likely arrive there) go to Como St. Giovanni station which is on the outskirts of the Como city. Trains from Milano Cadorna station go directly to the another train station in the heart of the city close to the ferries.

I would recommend to take train from Milano Centrale to Varenna (about 1 hour). It is a small train station, a walk from a hill and then you reach ferries to several villages across the lake, one of them is Bellagio - about 15 min trip directly, some ferries go first to Menaggio and then to Bellagio. Take the ferry for passengers only - there is another nearby for cars (it is slower).

It is necessary to check timetables as mentioned in an earlier post as the transportation services in winter/early spring are limited.

Hi..

Having asked the same question while we were planning, I can tell you that it will be best / quickest to take the train to Milan and then up to Varenna. We chose the Hotel Metropole based on location and from what I've been told it is a very nice hotel with great views of the lake. We'll be there in May, so I will report back on how things went.

Travel Tips for Bellagio

Colourful lakeside

by Aurorae

When you take the ferry in Bellagio, it's the unique opportunity to see the town up front, in a way you can't see it when you are in it! I love the colourful houses (most of them are hotels and restaurants), villas and parks, and the way it looks from the lake perspective! It's especially beautiful in a sunny afternoon.

Passages

by Aurorae

Bellagio is full of cute passages, with cozy restaurants hidden inside and usually there are always panels indicating where you are and where you're going, also with commercials and advertisements of the nearby shops , cafes, restaurants, galleries...

L'Orrido - Bellano Gorge & Waterfall

by CarolynShort

A couple of miles up the train track from Varenna is Bellano, which we visited to see L'Orrido (Gorge). I was a bit disappointed, gorge was deep, but not very long and not much water flowing, but maybe there hadn't been too much rain recently... still, it only cost a couple of Euros. Open from 10am till 11pm in the summer (till 7pm in winter)

Lonesome Lakeside Cemetery

by starship

At first glance I was unsure of exactly what these structures were. I guess I should have known that these were cemetery crypts as explained by our waterborne tour guide. The Italians have adapted to the lack of flat land around the lake, and have constructed terraces where possible, for uses such as this. You can see that each crypt or section is architecturally personalized, and it seems unique. I'm not sure I'd like to visit my loved ones interred in such a cemetery, but a lakefront resting place is certainly something special.

Limousine service

by Openseas

For those who want to do Bellagio in style and luxury you can hire a limo to take in the sights of Bellagio and Lake Como.

All cars are air-conditioned and mostly are Mercedes. You can also have airport pick-up or organize a car for further distances.

www. barindelli.it

Hotel Serbelloni also operates Limo service from their luxury hotel.
