Bergamo accommodation
by cogb
Hi,
I am travelling to Lake Garda in July '10. My flight arrives in Bergamo airport at 8pm. I need to stay 1 night near/in Bergamo and get train to Peschiera del Garda for Bella Italia in the morning. Have you any recommendations for cheap hotel for 1 night. Holiday Inn Express Mozzo is cheap but can anyone tell me how to get there at 8pm. Hope to avoid expensive taxi.

In the meantime, if you look on Google Maps you can see that Bergamo airport is south east of the city about 5 kms and your Holiday Express is the 'other side' by a further 6 kms approx.west.
So I think you may look at finding somewhere in Bergamo itself having taken the airport bus which is shown on this :

to the railway station ......
I can't help with the central place but one of the cheapest seems to be :

Hi, Bergamo is divided into 2 main parts Bergamo Bassa is the newer lower town, Bergamo Alta is the upper old (medieval) town. It's a pity that you don't have more time to spend here, it's a lovely place.
A trip up to the old town by the funicular, for a drink/ meal at night would make a great start to your holiday!
From Bergamo (Orio al Serio) airport
ATB Bus number 1 leaves the airport and stops at the train station in Bergamo Bassa(15 minutes), Porta Nuova (Bergamo Bassa, 17 minutes), the Funicular (20 minutes), which connects the lower and upper towns and Bergamo Alta (upper town 25 minutes)
The bus service runs from about 0600hrs -midnight.

Buy your ticket from the tourist office in the airport.
A single ticket costs 1 Euro (2009 price) and is valid for 90 minutes - You need to validate it on the bus. This also includes the funicular ride if taken in the time limit.
I recently stayed at the Best Western hotel in Bergamo, which was 5 minutes walk from the train station. Auberge Piemontese is a hotel opposite the train station, but these might be outside your budget. I usually advise checking out www.Venere.com or www.Booking.com when choosing accommodation - you can choose by budget, location etc and you don't pay until arrival/departure, also up to date reviews from people who've stayed there.
I see that Hotel Bella Italia arranges shuttle service from the airport, Have you considered contacting them to see if they provide a pick up from the train station. If not, they might have an arrangement with the taxi companies for a discounted fare-worth checking out!
Have a Great trip! If you want any more information about Bergamo or Lake Garda, please check out mine and other VTers pages, and feel free to contact me.
Best Wishes,
Sue
