Bergamo Train Station to St. Moritz?

by Areee01

Hello!
I am looking for the easiest way to get from Bergamo to St. Moritz (or one hour within St.Moritz)
I know that i could go to Milano and take a train from there, but was wondering if there is a train that runs directly from the Bergamo train station into Switzerland ...
Thanks in advance!

The answer "how to get from A to B by train in Europe" is, as almost always, in this case also to be found on www.bahn.de

There is no train that runs from Bergamo in to Switzerland. You can however take a series of (hopefully) connecting trains to Chiavenna and a bus from there.

Yes, you will find trains and details in English here:

http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml

There is no direct train, and the journey from either Milan or Bergamo involves changes.

From the latter it is around 5+ hours, from the former 4+.

Bahn.de will not give you through fares, but neither will the Italian railay site www.trenitalia.com because the journey involves bus/es.

English link for Trenitalia is www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

The train that runs up to Lugano and then BELLINZONA is your first leg.
Then you need to get the Bus over to THUSIS. Here you get the train that starts at Chur and finishes at St Moritz stopping at Thusis train station.
Probably going to take you a while !
You have the Italian train link to get trains from Bergamo to Bellinzona. (or Lugano then local train to Belinzona)
The bus link is
http://www.postauto.ch/en/index_pag.htm

You also have a direct bus from Lugano to St Moritz called the PALM EXPRESS. This runs from Lugano at 11.40 stops at Menaggio, Chiavenni and Majola before St Moritz - takes under 4 hours.

A very scenic route across the Alps to St Moritz is with the Bernina Express. From Bergamo you need to go to Tirano (2 hrs 40'), the trip with the panoramic train from Tirano to St Moritz takes another 2 hrs and 30'.

That looks like a winner ! http://www.rhb.ch/Bernina-Express.33.0.html?&L=4

Via Tirano is certainly an option, but it is at least an hour longer than via Chiavenna.
Also at the moment no trains are running from Tirano to st. Moritz. This because the line was interupted by an avalanche, and the RhB are still busy repairing it. Passengers are transported in Busses to Poschiavo, where they get on the train. It looks like trains will start running all the way to Tirano from april 4th onwards though.

Travel Tips for Bergamo

A panoramic look into the valley

by irisbe

From high places in the city you can have a wonderful look onto the opposite hills and into the valley.
This picture was taken from the tower Campanone on May 4th and we could see a dark cloud was coming near.
An hour later there was a big hale storm that lasted less then 60 minutes, then the air cleared up again.

I thought that the mist in the valley was due to this kind of weather conditions, but Titti explained that it often is misty in the valley.

its just a nice place to walk around in,feels nice and looks great in the spring,i still want to see an atalanta game but on my 9 trips have missed them every time so far
a very relaxing place to stroll about

Getting to the lakes

by smicki

We were pressed for time so we took the shortest possible way of getting to the Lake Como - which was a train from Bergamo to Lecco and then change for train to Varenna.

Don't do what we did and miss the stop for Varenna - we got off at the next stop Bellano and there was no train going in the other direction for 2 hrs. I recommend you skip Bellano (sorry Bellano!) and get off at the RIGHT stop and the journey should not take more that 1h30.

When you get to Varenna you can take any of a number of ferry to other towns on the lake, depending on how much time you have. If the weather is nice and you have a few hours to spare, DO IT!

Its well worth the journey .....

Dont miss this place for perfect food

by geordieontour about Pizzeria Portofino

This restaurant served up the perfect food I have eaten, although the menu in Italian well it is in Italy the staff were first class, and it was great fun just pointing at anything and ordering
The cost is the cheapest I have seem for a long time, it is mainly used by locals from the neighbourhood and you may be the only tourists in, but dont be put off.
You are made very welcome by all. Starters were to big and should have done what the locals do, share one
very pizza you think is on the menu, all the pastas are all fresh and the steaks the locals were eating were big!!!!!!!!!

Local wine in the jug was rough , but was only 7 euros a litre, but the bottled at 10 to 14euros was excellant value

Most locals were having a 15inch pizza and a large beer for 7 euros

Best Chinese in the area

by barrikello about Sin Jah

This chinese is my favourite so far in Bergamo and even in Italy I would say. The ambience is quite normal but what makes this place special is the good food and the nice waitresses. Moreover, the reataurant provides a one hour free pass at the nearby parking. I like the rice spaghetti and the caramel fruit
