Stairs, stairs everywhere!
by antz
I'm not sure that I could honestly say that this was my favourite thing about Bergamo - but there are steps everywhere!
Wandering around the Citta Alta, you will find so many little allyways which have a set of steps, and you can't even see where it ends! At one time, I did find this really useful actually. I was trying to figure out how to get out of the upper city, and just couldn't seem to find an exit. However, I did find a series of steps which seemed to be going endlessly downwards...I just started making my way down these, and came out at the Funicular! How helpful!
I did so much walking up and down steps that my legs are now solid! Very good if you want to lose a bit of weight!!
Clandestine Liquor Making
by painterdave
If you are lucky you will find a liquor maker, of which there are more than several in Bergamo. These talented individuals make a very fine raspberry and strawberry sherry type liquor. If you find one, it will be one of those, I know someone, whose father knows someone who makes......
Don't miss this chance to treat your palate to this craft.
Included here is one foto, the maker would not allow himself to be photographed due the the local officials who frown on this activity.
Monastero di Astino
by barrikello
This wonderful monastery is located in the western part of the city of Bergamo, near the street that reached Valbrembo. It's a magnific place deepened in the countryside, though it needs urgent restoration as it has been forgotten in the last 10 years.
The monastery used to be a relevant religious site since the XIII century.
Using the Funicular train in Bergamo
by Ekaterinburg
Bergamo is divided into upper and lower cities - Citta Alta and Citta Bassa. The bus from the airport will drop you right at the funicular stop in the lower city and then a five minute ride by Funicular will bring you to the centre of the upper city. The funicular is tiny and really old-fashioned. It goes up almot perpendicularly and the views as you look back are terrific. However, when you reach the upper city at Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe you need to climb again. This time a little foot slog is involved as you have to walk uphill, right through the town, to reach the second funicular station. This second trip brings you even higher to San Vigilio Hill and the castle. On this leg of the funicular you will get some superb photos of the Citta Alta below and the surrounding countryside.
Vt member Maurizio, has just pointed out to me that you can of course get to the Citta Alta by bus as well. This is true but I think for most visitors, the trip on the funicular would be more enjoyable. Thank's for the info Maurizio.
