 | L'angolo del Poeta: Comfortable rooms in the Lower Town

Accommodation does not come cheap in Bergamo, particurlarly in the centre. L'Angolo cost EUR 85 per night for a spacious double room with private bathroom, which seemed expensive but turned out to be good value, as many places of a similar price were either too far out or had less impressive facilities. Angolo del Poeta is a flat with two guest rooms and a shared dining room and kitchen. The flat is situtated in a medieval building with balconies arcing around a courtyard and wide stone stairways. Inside, the rooms are tastefully and but simply decorated. Although comfortable, the heating was turned off at night, however, and it was very, very cold. The rooms also have flatscreen TV with all the usual Italian channels and a minibar. This last was useful for late night drinks as the prices weren't inflated. Breakfast is served in the room at around 8. We weren't around on the first morning and our hostess insisted on leaving fruit juice and yoghurt in our minibar for us anyway. On the second day, we did have breakfast. Very good - nice scrambled eggs. The owner and his family were excellent hosts, providing us with plenty of tips about the town and how to get around. We were also given a discount for a couple of local pizzerias. The guesthouse is in the centre of the city's lower town, which makes it great if you want easy access to the train station as we did. The station is a 15-minute or so walk, but would have been the best part of an hour had we stayed in the upper city. In the other direction, the funicular to the old town is around 20 minutes away. If you are principally interested in the upper city, this may not be for you but if you're planning to use Bergamo as a base then this is a very useful location.
Pay EUR 15 for a lift to or from Orio al Serio airport. Lovely old building.
