The city of Como
by croisbeauty
Lake Como is situated in subalpine area of Italy and is of glacial origin. The lake is inhabited since prehistoric times and has always played important role as a line of communication between the northern regions and the Po valley. The Romans settled in after the Gauls, and under their rule this area gained strategic importance.
After the Franks, around year 1000, Como became a free-city, but still had to fight for its independence from feudal Visconti and Sforza families. Afterwards, Como was ruled by the Spaniards, then by the Austrians and finally by the French.
Villa Olmo back gardens
by Aurorae
Passing through two arches, you arrive to the back yard of the villa, which is nothing special, except for the impressive tree and a small neoclassical temple. It's a popular area for dogs as there is a big grass meadow.
BMW cat
by Aurorae
This cat was hilarious! As clasy as the car it occupied (not naive cat at all!) It was in front of the yachting club, of course, where all the super expensive show-off snob cars gather. This a la Lucifer cat was resting comfortably in its de luxe sofa. :)
Carnival
by MalenaN
I visited Como the last week in February, so it was carnival season. Children have a week holiday from school and they can be seen in different masquerade costumes (especially the younger ones) and sometimes their parents too. In Como there was a big parade on the Sunday I visited, but I just saw some glimpses of it. In streets and squares, especially at Piazza del Duomo, there was a lot of confetti.
skating on ice
by d_d
Between October and April, you can skate on ice in Casate (it's very close to Como, about 5 minutes by car).
The ticket's 3.10 EUR (=3.23$), it's a bit more expensive if you have to hire the skates.
All over the year, in Centro sportivo di Casate you can swim and practice many other sports.
