Train Journey

by TamaraA

we're arriving in Milan Malpensa at 21.00 approx, staying in Griante Lake Como, are there trains available for this route. Hotel charging 170 Euros for transfer and think a taxi would be less expensive. Any advise would be good as first time in Italy and travelling with 12yr old so want to easy.

Re: Train Journey

Yes, there is a train...to Como...

Go to www.lenord.it - this is the website of a private rail service that runs north of Milan, including the airport (the only rail service at the airport, in fact).

I looked for you and it seems that there are still a few trains at that late hour:
dep Malpensa 22:26 (train)
arr Saronno 22:43 (to change to a bus)
dep Saronno 23:04 (this is bus #191)
arr Como Lago 23:50

dep Malpensa 23:26 (train)
arr Saronno 23:43 (to change to a bus)
dep Saronno 00:34 (this is bus #101)
arr Como Lago 01:20

There's also a later train that leaves the airport at 23:56 that catches the same bus in Saronno at 00:34.

So, your question is really - if I arrive at Como Lago at midnight or after, will there be a taxi there to take me the 32 kilometers (20 miles) up to Griante? (this is as close as the train gets). It is unlikely that there will be any additional public transportation running at this hour. As for the taxi in Como, I don't know - it's normal for train stations to have a taxi queue, however, this is a small town late at night...perhaps someone else can confirm...

P.S. the Le Nord is a commuter rail service, so many trains are 2nd class only (OK with you), and no reservations are required (or even possible), so no need to try to buy the tickets in advance...

Note that I checked the schedule on a weekday next week. If you are arriving Saturday or Sunday evening, you will want to recheck the times, since commuter services across Italy are often reduced on Sundays and holidays.

Thanks for that info, now wonderin if there are any companies in Italy that provide airport transfers, thats not too expensive, as don't like the thought of switching trains to bus and still not arrive in Griante.

Re: Train Journey

Of course, there are companies that provides such transfers, such as www.airportconnection.it, but since the distance is quite far (about 90 kilometers/55 miles by road) and the hour late, the fee will be sizable...the website above suggested that the fee would be 247 euro for two of you (is the 170 euro per person or for both of you?)...did you have some reason for thinking that a taxi would be cheaper?

Travel Tips for Como

Colico

by Klod5

The village of Colico is located to the North tip, on the west strand of the lake.
It is can be one of the least appealing villages, at first sight, because it is constructed in a plain. On the other hand, the sportsmen will appreciate the nautical basis where they will be able to practice many sports of slips.

Around Lake Como...

by coceng

Another photo around Lake Como; It's a church, nice designs...
Como has thrived in history since the 14th century although the churches around Como have been built & re-built along the history line...

Evening walks

by Aurorae

Go for a walk also in the evening, not only during the day. The lakeside is beautifully enlighted and there are lots of interesting candelabres. You can also have your privacy in some of the many hideouts and little corners, since the lakseide is full of them! In the summer evenings you can soak your feet and listen to the water rumour under one of the lights.

Polizia

by croisbeauty

Italian police is very friendly and helpful to the visitors. You can ask almost anything you want about the place and get useful answer or tip. Besides, they wont be angry at all if you take the picture of them while on duty, espacially if they like it.

Bellagio

by MalenaN

Bellagio is not off the beaten path, but it is not in Como, but a one hour bus ride from there and it makes a good daytrip.

Bellagio is a picturesque small town situated on the tip between two branches of Lake Como. It is called the Pearl of the Lake because of its beauty and the town also has got a good climate. In winter it is about 6 - 7 °C and in summer about 25 - 30 °C. And there is sunshine about 200 days of the year.

In the 18th century the nobles built grand villas around Bellagio and already in the 19th century it became a holiday resort. Some of the villas have lovely gardens open to the public, but in February when I visited they were not open. I made a short visit in Bellagio from Como and walked around in the narrow allies with stairs, walked along the lake, visited the church and a couple of cafés.
