Villa Cipressi
by ajsmd about Villa Cipressi
We paid $90 US in early August. A wonderful 400-year old villa, with one wing converted to an inn. Our room had a huge window which opened facing west, replete with beautiful sunsets. There are four levels of gardens descending to the lake, with nooks and private benches. Most of the flora is labeled. For $90 a night, unsurpassed in value.

Stay in Villa Cipressi for the location and view. Choose a lake view room. we had #207 which had a small balcony. It was quiet and the lake looked beautiful in all lights.
The rooms are basic but very clean, and fine, after all we only slept in there!
The outside areas of the hotel are lovely to explore. Take the ferry to Bellagio for coffee and afternoon aperitivo. Chill and slow down. Lake Como viewed from Varenna is at its best. Eat at Hotel Milano, but reserve a table, it's restaurant is very small.

We stayed at hotel Villa Cipressi at the beginning of June and we really enjoy our stay, the room was fantastic with five windows facing the lake. we were two of us and we could enjoy and wonderful table on e terrace facing the garden and the lake...and the restaurant of the Hotel. in the afternoon we had a wanderful bath in the Jacuzzi in the garden and the atmophere was great.
We would like to spend same words also for the wanderful staff we met: nice and friendly people as Italians are, and also very professional.
we have been promised a nice table at the restaurant, and we got it and even our departure day we have been given some food for breakfast even though it was very early in the morning and breakfast room was still close. We really appreciaded that.
Nervous staff, beautiful views, abundant breakfast

We stayed two nights in the Cipressi in July. After busy days in tourist spots, Varenna was restful, quiet, and low-key. It's a small town and it's possible to walk to Villa Cipressi from the train station, but it took longer than we thought (15-20 minutes). Make sure your baggage is carry-able, or call a taxi. Also, buy your return ticket before leaving the station--the ticket window opens late, and you must pay extra on the train if you don't have a ticket.
Villa Cipressi is beautful and enormous, with large rooms and lots of old-fashioned details, like beamed ceilings and huge, barred doors. The first night we stayed in a non-view, non-AC room overlooking a courtyard. The temperature was fine (it's much cooler in Lake Como than in the rest of Italy in July), but there was constant noise from people walking through the courtyard and banging doors. It was also a bit too close to the village church with chiming bells starting at 7 a.m. The second night we requested a different room and for about 20 euros more were put in a huge corner room with AC and incredible views of the lake. Do yourself a favor and get a room with a view! Or at least not on the noisy courtyard.
Breakfast was incredible...every possible topping for toast, including jams, butters, nutella, fish spreads, etc. There were dozens of breads, pastries, cakes, cheeses, meats...by far the best breakfast in Italy, and with an incredible view.
The staff was pleasant and helpful, but seemed nervous and jumpy, as if expecting we would yell at them or waiting for the boss to come scold them. We asked about the hot tub and the staff seemed very reluctant for us to use it, as it had rained earlier in the day. ?? When we pressed, we were allowed to use it, for a fee of 10 euros. Unfortunately, it was completely cold. The staff gave us our money back, but the whole encounter was fraught with nervousness on their part.
We ate dinner in the hotel restaurant the second night, which was amazing. My husband had pasta with trout and I had bacon wrapped sirloin with au gratin potatoes. Two months later I can still remember that meal, again with stunning sunset lake views. One waiter skillfully tended everyone in our dining room and accomodated some very demanding guests with grace.
There's not a lot to do in Varenna, so be prepared to be lazy or travel to other lake towns. We took a lovely day trip to Lugano, Swtizerland, about an hour by bus from Menaggio.
Bottom line: a luxury hotel at a good price. Get a view room, and don't bother with the hot tub.
Beautiful hotel, good service, breakfast included

This hotel is just as picturesque as in the pictures on their website. It's located at the end of town and is a small hike from the train station. The service was pretty good for us, unlike the other experiences written for this hotel. But they had told us ahead of time that if we were planning to leave before 8am, then we should try and check out the night before so we did just that. It worked out just fine. The service was good overall and their english was even better. The room was solid. Not anything too fancy, but solid. The breakfast was actually quite tasty, fruit/cheese/ham/nutella/french bread rolls etc. The only problem with this hotel is the location. Lake Como is a little dull and boring. I was hoping for something more exciting and the choice of restaurants is limited and fair.
Nice hotel with great view

Stayed at this hotel for two nights in late April 2006 as part of a tour group. Contrary to previous reviews, the service was very good, hotel desk staff was friendly, spoke excellent English, and after half a day remembered my room number without prompting (you leave your keys with the desk when you leave the hotel). Excellent view of the lake from the room I stayed in. Beautiful gardens (just starting to bloom in late April, will be lovely in summer). The only complaint is the bed was very hard (not firm, actually hard).
Breakfast was average for Italian hotel breakfasts (rolls, coffee, some cold cuts, yogurt). Regular brewed coffee was better than the cappuccino (which tasted like instant coffee with foamed milk). Had one dinner catered by the restaurant that was excellent. Several decent eateries in town. Great gelato on the waterfront. Good place to relax and take in the quiet side of Italy.

We spent three nights at this lovely villa in May. Our room overlooked the garden, the lake and the terrace. It was clean, quiet and comfortable. It was fun to experience staying in a villa and we weren't disappointed by the decor. There was some interesting rennovation going on where old decor was being restored. Workers were as unobtrusive as possible. The hotel was located across the street from the tourist info and a few doors away from eating establishments and a little market where you could buy meat, cheese & wine. There was also a close tobacco shop with internet and train tickets sold. The breakfast was better than many in Italy where folks don't really eat breakfast. The staff was impersonal and not very helpful. When I had to cancel a hotel reservation via the internet they refused to help at the hotel because they "had a function later that day". Basically, don't expect much from the staff. They're not going to put themselves out for you, but efficient and all in all, we had a very nice stay. My only disappointment was we had been promised an outdoor jacuzzi with a lake view. When we inquired we were told it had been cleaned & wasn't warm yet. Same story the next day. We walked out to check it and found it empty and permanently closed up with bungie cords. Apparently they found it better to lie to us than admit they didn't have a jacuzzi. Disappointing. Especially when several of the employees had given us the same story so it was sort of a house lie.
Great views and charm

We stayed here 1 night and wish it could have been more. We had a large room and bathroom; no terrace, but a huge window looking right out at Lake Como. This hotel has a very tiny elevator, but it is still an elevator! It is a good location for walking anywhere in Varenna and has beautiful outdoor gardens. It is larger than some of the other places so we did have tour group in the hotel while we were there.

Lockers at Como train station
by Emma77
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knows if there are any lockers available at or near Como train station? We are only stopping there for a few hours so need somewhere to store our luggage.
Thanks!
Re: Lockers at Como train station

I believe there are no left luggage facilities at Como station.
Could you change (?) your plans and leave your bags at Milan Centrale, for example? It's an easy train journey from Milan to Como.
http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/ for times and fares.
www.grandestazioni.it will give you information about Milan C services (English pages). Basically, left luggage is open from 0600 to 2400 every day, 4 euro per item for the first 5 hours then 0.60 for eah subsequent hour up to 12, then 0.20 for every hours thereafter.

Well, the first question is: which station at Como? There are 4 stations at Como, one (San Giovanni) is used by Trenitalia (the national railroad), and the other three are used by Le Nord, the private railroad that runs north of Milan.
The Trenitalia website says what J told you, that there don't appear to be any Left Luggage facilities at Como San Giovanni. The phrase "Deposito Bagagli" doesn't even appear on the Le Nord website (www.lenord.it); whether this means that none of their stations have Left Luggage or this means that the website just doesn't tell you, I don't know. I wouldn't be shocked if none of them did, but I couldn't say from personal knowledge, having never used Le Nord.
So, as J says, first tells us which rail service you are using, then tell us your itinerary (like, are you going from Milan to Como, then Como to somewhere else without returning to Milan?), and we'll see what we can do...

Thank you for the replies. I am traveling from Lucern to Milan so was hoping to stop in Como before continuing on to Milan, so it isn't possible to leave the bags at Milan. I believe the station is San Giovanni - I tried to look on some of the websites and saw that they didn't have a luggage room, but was hoping that they may have lockers instead, but it isn't looking hopeful. Thanks again!

Well, yes, if you are coming from Luzern, then you'd be coming on the national railroad, so it's Como San Giovanni.
They don't generally have lockers in Italy, but rather have manned offices where they store your luggage.
