Can anyone advise the best way to get from Limone to Gardaland and what is the average journey time please? I will also consider hiring a car if recommended too.

Ferries aren't of big use:

If not, a bus to Riva (or Ferry to Malcesine) and then a bus direct to GArdaland
http://www.aptv.it/pdf/62-64.pdf should add up to 2hours+
By car, it could be an hour and a half (depending on traffic: avoid weekends!).
