Metro subway station, Milan Italy

by Connj

Two couples will be traveling by rental car from Zurich to Milan, 28 May 2011. After Milan visit we wish to travel by same rental car to Genoa and Pisa. Could you recommend a Metro station and adjacent parking lot near highway A7/E62, South-Southwest of Milan inner city. We wish to find a hotel within walking distance of this metro station and travel to the Duomo, La Scala, etc., and return. Any help, advice, suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you very much

I cannot help with the parking/Metro I'm afraid.

But once you have sorted that out (other VT-ers should be able to help) have a look on www.booking.com and www.venere.com (which lists almost all Italian hotels). Both sites are entirely reliable, with honest guest reviews posted by people who complete their stay booked through the sites, and good mapping. You can limit your search by specific area, so will be able to find somewhere near whichever Metro station suits. Neither site will take any money from you (you just pay the hotel as usual) and most hotels allow free cancellation up to 24/48 hours in advance, though check their individual policies.

You might prefer to find a hotel which includes parking.

Assago would probably the best option as it has hotels as well as a metrostation (metro map: http://www.nbts.it/milano/mappa_metropolitana_1.htm). Assago is one of the exits on the Eastern ringroad (Tangenziale Est) and is also close to the junction with the highway to Genova (A7).
The green metroline from Assago takes you into the city where you then can get the red line to the Duomo, La Scala etc.

Venere and booking.com both offer accommodation in that area, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Travel Tips for Milan

The Best Milan Has To Offer

My favorite part of the city is the exterior of its duomo. The intricate details of the outside of the duomo. Even though it was under repair while we where there I will remember its architectural workings as one of my favorites.

Squeeze the bull's balls

by tomerik

In the Galleria de Emmanuel Vittorio next to the Duomo there is a picture of a bull on the ground. Place your heel on the bull's balls, turn 360° around once, without tripping, while you make a wish. If you manage this your wish will be fulfilled so they say.

da Vinci's Horse

by vichatherly

This horse was designed by Leonardo da Vinci as the world's largest equestrian statue in the 15th century, but was never built.

In 1999 a team of Americans came together to fulfil da Vinci’s four legged fantasy using his original plans. The horse is enormous and it stands in a courtyard not too far from the San Siro, so we spotted it on the way down to the ground.

It’s said that it is tucked away here as some sort of sign as to how well received it was by the locals.

I though it looked fabulous, but then where do you put it?

by baronedivandastad about Navigli

Navigli used to be a network of canals that were mainly used for transportation and irrigation (see my things to do tip).

Today, only two of the navigli have survived the city reshape that took place in the late 18th and early 19th century, and you can find both of them (as well as the "darsena", the main water deposit) in the area of Porta Ticinese.

These rivers make the setting for Milan's liveliest area after the sun sets.

Pizzerias, breweries, bars, pubs, restaurant - name it. You'll find everything down here. The list of places is practically endless, so just go there and take a walk (and a sip).

Take care not to fall in the water when drunk - the stream is treacherous! :o) Try to look nice, otherwise you may feel the Milanese are outdressing you.

Malpensa

by sinoda

The trip between Malpensa airport and the city centre is killing if travelled by bus on an Sunday afternoon.

Your options are either train or bus (or pullmann as the airport's website call the bus variant).

I experinced the train as a much more pleasant and convenient way of travelling although the 40 minutes from Malpensa to the stazione Nord cost 9,50e.

On the other hand if you like to enjoy a city tour in a bus, please help yourself, but consider some 60 minutes drive from or to the stazione Centrale <-->Malpensa, but maybe you cannot expect more if the fare is 4.5e.
