Milan -areas to avoid?
by politicat
I'm trying to make hostel reservations before leaving for Europe this weekend. I found many options at hostelworld.com.... can anyone give guidance on the best/worst parts of town? Should I try to find something located near a specific landmark?
Hotel Demo (via Tonale 14) appears to be a good choice, it is located 100 meters from the central station- is this good or bad?

Hi,
here I am.... !!
I agree with the previuos (the first one!) comment... by the way Milan is pretty safe... it's a big city and so the risks are the same of the major cities of Europe and US I think.
When I went to Dallas I got many warning about going out in the night, once there I spent three months going out almost every evening without any problem...
Here is the link of the Youth Hostel of Milan:
http://www.ostellionline.org/ostello.php?idostello=208
It's located pretty closed to the subway station of QT8, so from there you can quickly get to the center or the train stations... the area is not bad (there is a park very closed), I don't know about the hostel... sometimes I've heard from someone that it's not so good... but also it depends from your budget...
Just ask if you have some question,
Ciao, Marco

In a first place you should avoid in the night the whole area around the central station, also Via Vittruvio and Corso Buenos Aires and in particularly Vialle Zara.
Like Marco said, Milano is pretty safe town but above mentioned areas are not recommendable for a single girl during the night - red light allert!

I agree with the answers above, Central Station and its immediate surroundings are not the safest place in Milan. BTW I live about 1km from the station and it's safe. So, just move a little bit far from via Tonale and you'll be ok

I work a few minutes frm hotel Demo and, yes, at night that area is not so pleasant, but I wouldn't call it unsafe.
Basically, most of the budget hotels near Centrale have this "PLUS" of the vicinity to the railway... and it may be enough, if you spend most of your time around the city. The areas around Loreto or Porta Venezia aren't much better...
You may also choose very very central 1* hotels, like Hotel Speronari, otherwise... it's gonna be just a bit more expensive and you get there easily with the yellow line of the subway.
If you're gonna stay for a while you may consider pensions near Navigli (e.g. Pensione Cantore), very close to nightlife and interesting areas.
