Tax Refunds On Your Shopping
by Krystynn
Non-EU residents (e.g. American, Australian and Asian tourists) can claim back the value added tax on purchases totalling over €154.94 from a single store that displays a 'Tax Free Shopping' sign.
Just remember to keep all your receipts and have them stamped at Customs when you leave Italy. Please don't wear your newly acquired Versace necklace or Ferragamo shoes until you are well clear of Customs. And finally, remember to submit your 'VAT back' paperwork!
There are refund centers at Malpensa and Linate airports open from 7am-11pm every day of the year to service you.
Hot brands
by glamourprincess about Zap!
Two floors of fashionable, but still reasonable priced clothes, accessories, underwear, jewellery, books(!).. Lots of different new, popular and hot brands such as Kokaii, Hello Kitty..etc. In this store you can find unusual and unique objects. It's a great store because there are so many beautiful items, and most of them are affordable as well. I found a really beautiful Hello Kitty bag (I've gotten so many compliments!), some really cool Hello Kitty things for my room and there were lots of cool t-shirts that I wanted as well..
Bar Magenta
by PSK808 about Bar Magenta
A great lively atmosphere! This popular bar is best visited with a bunch of friends during apperitivo, a time when free appetizers are given out, usually around 7 pm. This is somewhat of a 'happy hour' with free food and reduced price drinks. Go to the cashier first to order your drinks (the drink menu is on the wall behind him), pay him and take your reciept to the bartender who will then make your drink. The sangria here is excellent as is their grasshopper. In addition to mixed drinks, you'll find an assortment of beer and food. You'll want to make sure to put this bar on your list of places to go the next time you're in Milan! Normal European "going out at night but not to a club" clothes. No shorts. Look good, you never know who you'll meet! :)
Ciao, Mr Taxi Driver...
by Krystynn
Sadly... and speaking from experience, cabs are not very easy to flag down on the streets of Milan. They just don't do it here.
What's the best thing to do for a tourist?
Well, I'd advise you to go to a cab stand or call for a radio taxi. On rainy days and during the Fiera Milano (expo center) where big events are held, it is IMPOSSIBLE to get a cab! Oh, and please remember that when calling for a radio taxi, the meter starts running as soon as the driver gets the call!
The most memorable cab fare I've paid for here in Milan?
Approx. €70 from Milan city center to Malpensa International Airport to catch my international flight home to Singapore. Sadly, there are no direct flights to Singapore. Direct flights to Singapore are only via Roma.
So my favored route would be Milan to Frankfurt on Lufthansa; and then from Frankfurt to Singapore on Singapore Airlines, of course.
HOT TIP: Many radio taxi dispatchers don't speak English. So please ensure that you learn a few choice Italian words and pronounce them clearly and carefully. Some radio dispatchers do speak a little English and if you're lucky enough, they'll pick your call!
