Modern Art at Piazza Meda
by littlesam1
Not all of the art work in Milan is ancient. This giant rotating disc was sculpted by Amaldo Pomodoro in 1980. It actually rotates. It is within walking distance of the Duomo but is direct contract to historic scenes around the Duomo. It is located in Piazza Meda.
Como - a nice daytrip from Milan
by MalenaN
Como is a city in Lobardy in northern Italy. It is situated 45 km north of Milan (about an hour away by train) and near the Swiss border. It is also situated by the beautiful Lago di Como, surrounded by mountains. Como dates back to Roman time when the Romans founded Comum in 196 BC. Today Como has 86 000 inhabitants.
Winters are dry and cold in Como with temperatures of about 4 - 6°C and the summers are hot and wet. The average temperature in summer is 24 - 26°C. When I visited in the end of February it was after an unusually cold winter, but the sun was shining and it was the first spring days. On the highest mountains by the lake snow could still be seen on the top.
Como has a lovely historical centre where it is nice to walk around on the almost car free streets. The historical centre has medieval walls on three sides and here you find the cathedral and other interesting buildings. Around Como there are several grand villas and parks, and lovely small towns by the lake to visit.
Huge store with lots of cool brands
by glamourprincess about JDC Urban Store
JDC has three huge floors of fashion and cool stuff. If you go there in July there was a summer sale with clothes filling the top floor. They carry both well-known brands and cheaper clothes by their own JDC brand. Levi's, Fornarina, Diesel..etc. At one of the floors you'll find a large selection of bath and body products, and accessories. I loved the Aquolina products. Aquolina - a real bargain, lovely, delicious bath and body products.
Milan Tip
by billus
Duomo facade is a rather unique fusion of classical elements (columns, lintels, architraves, triglyphs) and Gothic (pointed arches, statues, filigrees). Absent from the Italian rendering of Gothic are huge glass windows. Appropriate to northern France where Gothic originated, here in Milan so much glass and sunlight would fry the congregants alive!
Ciclobby
by Nemorino
After riding around Milan on a bicycle for several days I decided to pay a visit to the folks at Ciclobby, Milan's "cyclo-environmentalist" association that is working and lobbying for improvements to Milan's catastrophic cycling situation.
This is an exciting time for Ciclobby, because after twenty years of slogging and achieving only minimal improvements in the face of massive resistance, inertia and indifference, they are starting to realize that their time is coming, very soon. Urban bicycle use is increasing dramatically all over Europe, and Ciclobby is working to see that Milan is not left behind.
I was given a warm welcome at Ciclobby. One of the young women spoke good English, so I didn't have to stammer around in my rudimentary Italian, but when I let on that I could read Italian they gave me lots of literature which I later read on the train on the way home.
Address: Via Borsieri 4/E - 20159 Milano.
Second photo: In the Ciclobby office.
Third photo: A window display telling how and why to get around by bicycle.
Fourth photo: Ciclobby is a member of the Italian Federation of Friends of the Bicycle (FIAB).
