making the best of one night in Milan

by mxmann

Looking for suggestions on a good area and hotel to stay and spend 2 days and 1 night in Milan. I would like to be able to walk( or be close) to the shops, restraunts and night life. I also would like to have easy access to the train station so that I can get to MXP airport. Trip will be in Sept........thanks for suggestions.

Can't help with hotels, but just a head's up: If you want to see "The Last Supper" don't wait until you get there to book a ticket. They sell out ahead of time.

hy,
I can suggest you, close the Main Station, the Hotel New York. I booked with Booking.com and it was not expensive. Excellent location, good and clean rooms, 2 minute walk to the railway station and metro station,4 minute walk to the bus stop to the airport, a big breakfast and the staff is friendly and ready to help you.
I paid 75€ in November, not too much for Milan.

Hiya... I stayed at Hotel Demidorf, very close to the Central Station and just around the crner is Av. Bueonos Aires where lots of the shops and restaurants are. I booked it with www.booking.com and it was easy and very reasonable. You don't pay on line, but at the hotelk on departure. Hope this helps.

Travel Tips for Milan

Post Office @ the Airport

by XKuger

I found this to be extreemly convenient.. specially when you are on vacation and are really busy tying to do/ see as much as you can ot just sitting back and enjoying the ambiance. One does not get time to got to a post office and wait in long lines to mail home cards to friends and family.

Having a working post office at the airport is so convenient as just before you get on a flight you can quickly write cards and drop them off in the mail.

I was able to drop all the milan cards in the mail... Not one but many even though my stop was just a day..

1. The Dumo.
2. The Joia restaurent.
3. The pigeons at the Dumo.
4. My frantic search for the best pizza.
5. The ultra expensive clothes shopping.
6. The sadness of unable to see the last supper.

-- Its a very memorable trip that I will cherish ---

Asking for directions

by stefano99

If in the evening you are looking for somewhere to go to dance at after the bars have closed, then remember that a phrase such 'Dove sono i Nightclub?', ie. where are the nightclubs? actually means 'where are the lap dancing clubs?' The Italians refer to their Nightclubs, as 'Discotecca'.

One to remember unless you want some strange looks :).

Piazza Fontana

by Diana75

The name of this square is given by the wonderful granite fountain decorated with dolphins and sirens.

Located very close to the Dome, in a certain way off the beaten touristic path, Piazza Fontana was made following the plans of Piermarini by Giuseppe Franchi in 1782.

Simplicity from Japan

by nomadig about Muji

I know that Muji is expanding, but I was a bit surprised to see their shop in Milan -- the design is so strong in the northern Italy and people seem to be so loyal to the local traditions. Nevertheless, the shop was enjoying a good amount of customers already on early Saturday morning.

Brief introduction to Muji for the non-initiated: Muji is a Japanese design brand that is based on simplicity and no-labels approach. They sell quality stuff, everything from office supplies to clothes, furniture and tableware -- of course, depending on the size of the shop. Nowadays they seem to be found in every big market.

Muji's competitive advantage is not pricing, but the form follows function design that pleases the eye.

Air

by antistar

Ryanair's Milan airport (actually in Bergamo) is one of their hubs, meaning cheap flights to the region from all over Europe. Milan's two main airports, Linate and Malpensa, are a lot closer, and are served by practically all of the major airlines, so you will most likely be able to book a flight to the city no matter where in the world you come from.
